Week 3: vs Atlanta Falcons

All RB vs ATL

FBG says: Neutral matchup. Ameer Abdullah led the Lions backfield last week with 17 carries for a career-high 86 yards--fueled by a big 34-yard run during garbage time in the fourth quarter last week. Abdullah out-snapped the rest of this backfield again this week, as Dwayne Washington was only in on seven plays while Theo Riddick came in as a close second with 27 snaps to Abdullah's 28. The snap count is encouraging for Abdullah, but it is worth noting that he lost both possible red zone looks to Dwayne Washington--causing concern for Abdullah's touchdown upside. The Falcons defensive interior bounced back after a tough outing in Week 1, holding Ty Montgomery to only 3.5 yards per carry with no runs longer than seven yards. The loss of Vic Beasley for a few weeks to a hamstring tear is a big blow for this rushing defense, as he provided solid support for this defensive line. Beasley will be replaced by rookie Takkarist McKinley, who did not look good in his limited run defense snaps last week. The Falcons secondary is much better in pass defense than they are against the run, so they will not be a ton of help here in what should be a good matchup for the Lions.

Recent Game Summaries

2017 Week 2 vs NYG (3 / 9 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Dwayne Washington was limited on the game to only three carries for 9 yards. Washington did replace Ameer Abdullah in the red zone, where he saw two of his three carries. After badly misplaying a kickoff in week one, Washington was not used on kick returns. He was the clear third back in the backfield, and limited to short yardage and goal line situations.

2017 Week 1 vs ARI (6 / 22 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Dwayne Washington functioned as the goal line and short yardage back in replacing Ameer Abdullah. He converted a short third down with additional linemen in the formation, and ran through contact at the second level. Washington served as the kick returner but misplayed a short kick creating bad field position for the Lions. Assuming he continues in the kick returning role, Washington is locked into the short yardage and goal line role as Detroit's third running back ahead of Zach Zenner.
