Week 17: at Baltimore Ravens
Mark and Joe say: Bad matchup. With Johnny Manziel out due to a hamstring injury and Brian Hoyer likely out due to a shoulder issue, it looks like the Browns may start Connor Shaw in the season finale. According to Matt Waldman's 2014 Rookie Scouting Portfolio (used with permission): 'Shaw demonstrates flashes of anticipation and ball placement in the middle of the field that I like. Like Hoyer and Manziel, he has some quickness as a runner from the pocket. A decent improviser with an aggressive mentality down field despite lacking a franchise arm. The lack of velocity on this throws might be a difficult issue to overcome because of how slow the ball is off his arm. He's also too quick to abandon the pocket and has suffered a lot of injuries during his career.' The Browns' receivers come into this situation with few practice reps with Shaw, which will limit their familiarity with him. The Ravens' pass rushers have compiled 45 sacks this season, third most in the NFL, and Cleveland has allowed 27 sacks (ninth-best in the NFL in this category). There is no doubt that the Ravens will put the heat on Shaw and see if he can stay in the pocket and deliver good passes - Case Keenum and company (another young quarterback) in a similar situation last weekend for the Texans delivered 21/43 for 190 net yards, zero TDs and one interception thrown (with zero sacks taken). Two weeks ago rookie Blake Bortles was sacked eight times for -63 yards by the Ravens on the way to 22/38 for 166 net yards, zero TDs and one interception thrown. As you can see, the Ravens are tough on young starting quarterbacks. Advantage, Baltimore.
Latest NewsBrowns | Re-sign Tyler Thigpen (Tue Dec 23, 11:37 AM) - The Cleveland Browns re-signed QB Tyler Thigpen Tuesday, Dec. 23. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Our View: With Johnny Manziel out and Brian Hoyer unlikely to play, the Browns need all the QB help they can get. Thigpen is an athletic southpaw with a big arm. He's got plenty of experience and could fill in if necessary.
