Week 16: vs New England Patriots
Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. This is an AFC East grudge match, so season records aren't really relevant - the Jets and the Patriots play each other tough every time they clash. Their last meeting was in Week Seven, when the Patriots prevailed 27-25 by blocking a last-second field-goal attempt by the Jets.
Geno Smith threw 20/34 for 226 net yards passing, one TD and zero interceptions, while taking three sacks for -21 yards, the last time he faced the Patriots. Since then he's gone to the bench and then been re-installed as the starter - last week, Smith managed 16/28 for 179 net yards passing, one TD and zero interceptions with three sacks taken for -16 yards at Tennessee - Eric Decker led the team in receiving with 11 for 7/100/0, while Percy Harvin saw three passes for zero receptions and had one rush for 10 yards passing. Jace Amaro (one for 1/20/0) and Jeff Cumberland (two for 2/22/0) were the other receivers over 20 yards last week. Fullback John Conner (one for 1/9/1) managed the TD pass for Smith.
The Patriots' pass D has allowed 29/47 for 308 yards passing, one TD and two interceptions (with four sacks for -38 yards) to Ryan Tannehill and 20/33 for 163 yards passing, one TD and one interception (with four sacks for -26 yards) to Philip Rivers over the last two games. They are currently 22nd in the NFL averaging 248.7 net passing yards allowed per game, with 22 passing scores balanced by 15 interceptions (tied for ninth in the NFL) and 36 sacks (tied for 10th) generated to date.
Smith has found a (modesty) rhythm of late, while the Patriots are fairly vulnerable in this phase of the game most weeks - at home we give Smith a slight edge over the Patriots' defenders in this phase of the contest.
