Week 8: at Atlanta Falcons
Mark and Joe say: Great matchup. Matthew Stafford worked without his top wide receiver, Calvin Johnson, and both of his top two tight ends, Eric Ebron and Joseph Fauria, last week. He still managed a come-from-behind victory over the Saints, with 27/40 for 299 yards passing, two TDs and two interceptions thrown, with three sacks taken for -14 yards. Golden Tate continues to be worth his weight in the shiny stuff, with 13 targets for 10/154/1 receiving last weekend; five other receivers caught at least two balls from Stafford, including Corey Fuller (five targets for 3/44/1), who accounted for the other TD pass. With Johnson traveling to London this week and reportedly feeling much better, Stafford may get to play this week with the consensus top wide receiver in the NFL - stay tuned to Footballguys.com's Players in the News for the latest on this front, and remember this game will be played extra-early in U.S. time on Sunday thanks to the kickoff being in Wembley Stadium, London UK. You'll likely have to make the call on whether to start Johnson or sit him on Saturday night, at the latest.
The Falcons' pass D is nose-diving as the season goes along, currently ranking 29th in the NFL averaging 274.4 net passing yards allowed per game, with eight passing scores given up vs. only four interceptions (tied for 18th in the NFL) and a paltry seven sacks (tied-27th) generated. Joe Flacco threw 16/25 for 248 net yards, two TDs and two interceptions last week, with one sack taken for -10 yards; Jay Cutler bombed this group for 26/38 yielding 381 yards passing, one TD and zero interceptions (with two sacks taken for -6 yards) two weeks ago.
Stafford has a great matchup to work with here in front of the Brit crowd.
