RB Gary Russell - Free Agent
|5-10, 200||Born: 9-8-1986||College: Minnesota||Drafted: ---|
2009 Week 7 vs NYJ (1 / 2 / 0 rush, 3 / 2 / 2 / 0 rec)
Russell had three touches, mostly on two short catches on three chances in Week 7 against the New York Jets. All were for three yards or less, making Russell' scant touches and scant production virtually meaningless for fantasy purposes.
2009 Week 14 vs WAS (2 / -2 / 0 rush, 2 / 2 / 22 / 0 rec)
Russell was downright dangerous on kickoff returns, and showed his versatility on a nice catch and run for 20 yards. Russell did fumble on one return, but the wet conditions looked to be partly responsible, as the ball really squirted out. He was not used often (2 rushes, 2 receptions) but played more than Michael Bush, which could be a good sign for him going forward.
2009 Week 16 vs CLE (0 / 0 / 0 rush, 2 / 2 / 14 / 0 rec)
Russell was used as an outlet receiver and caught two passes for short gains.
2008 Week 11 vs SD (2 / 10 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)
Russell may have worked himself into the mix for the role of short yardage back with this game. After Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore were stuffed in short yardage situations in the first half, Russell converted two third and one carries in the third quarter to help preserve drives. He hit the hole hard and picked up much more than what was needed, gaining six on his first carry and four on the second.
2008 Week 12 vs CIN (3 / 5 / 1 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)
Russell got a two yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The touchdown came after RB Willie Parker left the game.
2008 Week 19 vs SD (4 / 5 / 1 rush, 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)
Used almost exclusively in short yardage situations, Russell got the call on a number of occasions in this game. Midway through the second quarter, he was called upon to convert a third and one carry. He picked up the necessary yardage with a strong second effort. Then late in the third quarter, he took a third down carry to the goal line but could go no further. Carey Davis came in for the ensuing goal line run but was stuffed. On Pittsburgh's next possession, Russell again got the call from the one and this time he converted. The touchdown put the Steelers up 28-10 and effectively put the game out of reach.
2008 Week 21 vs ARI (2 / -3 / 1 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)
Russell finished the game with minus rushing yardage but scored the Steelers' first touchdown on a one yard plunge early in the second quarter.
2007 Week 13 vs CIN (1 / 1 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)
His only rush of the game came with 2:35 remaining in the game.
2007 Week 17 vs BAL (6 / 20 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)
Russell replaced RB Najeh Davenport as the featured back in the second half but he did not make much of an impact.
