Week 15: vs Washington Redskins
FBG says: Good matchup. The Jaguars are likely done with Blake Bortles, and as expected, Cody Kessler has provided thoroughly mediocre relief over his two starts. Kessler was strictly a game manager in a slugfest win over the Colts in Week 13, then struggled to play catch-up in losing to the Titans last Thursday. A true backup with a limited skillset, Kessler is no more suited to taking charge with the pass than Bortles. He's not turning the ball over as much, but has produced just 5.6 yards per attempt over 3 appearances for the Jaguars. Kessler is easily stymied by the pass rush, taking 11 sacks over just 108 dropbacks, and has almost no downfield element to his game. His presence is no boost for the fantasy value of his receivers, either. Last week, with the Jaguars trying to rally, Donte Moncrief and Dede Westbrook each drew 10 targets - but managed just 135 yards and 1 touchdown with them. The Jaguars will continue to hope Kessler and the passing game aren't needed to win, which could well be the case Sunday. But if they can successfully control the game with running and defense, there likely won't be much chance for Kessler and his receivers to produce. This is a strictly hands-off unit for fantasy purposes. The Washington pass defense remains a subpar unit, one that's fallen off in recent weeks and become extremely friendly to opposing passers. They've allowed 5 of the last 7 quarterbacks they've faced to top 285 yards through the air, and even Eli Manning was on pace to hit that mark before last Sunday's game turned blowout. Opponents are completing 67% of their throws in this matchup at 6.8 net yards per attempt, 10th-most in football. The pass rush is pulling its weight, with 34 sacks coming from a wide variety of bodies. But the secondary remains a major sore spot, frequently losing one-on-one matchups and allowing long receptions. Cornerback Fabian Moreau has been a bright spot, but Josh Norman is showing his limitations as a cover man at age 30, losing downfield too often. It doesn't help that the team's best 2018 performer, Quinton Dunbar, is now on injured reserve. This remains a shaky group, and it now faces a depth issue at cornerback, with inconsistent rookie Greg Stroman now pressed into heavy snaps. Cody Kessler may not be the quarterback to take advantage, but he's in good position to post a decent line against this underachieving unit.
