Week 7: vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Mark and Joe say: Neutral matchup. Colin Kaepernick started off his comeback on the wrong end of a 16-45 drubbing by Buffalo, but he doesn't play on defense so there was little Kaepernick could do about the defensive front allowing 44/312/4 rushing last week. For his part, Kaepernick threw 13/29 for 187 yards passing, one TD and zero interceptions while taking three sacks for -20 (he added 8/66/0 rushing to the team effort). Torrey Smith came back from the fantasy living dead with Kaepernick back under center, seeing seven targets for 3/76/1 receiving, while Quinton Patton (seven for 4/52/0) and Jeremy Kerley (seven for 2/12/0) also saw seven chances - Kaepernick and Kerley haven't worked together much, so their chemistry hasn't developed yet. Vance McDonald saw two targets for 2/25/0 and Rod Streater had one for 1/16/0 - those were all the receivers who managed double-digit receiving totals last week. We'll see if Kaepernick can build on these modest numbers in Week Seven. Before the bye week, the Tampa pass defense feasted on Derek Anderson holding him and his team out of the endzone in the passing phase of the game while picking him off twice (and forcing two lost fumbles, including one by Anderson) - when the dust settled Anderson had 18/28 for 278 yards passing. In Week Four, the Buccaneers allowed 19/31 for 218 net yards passing, two TDs and zero interceptions to the Broncos' quarterbacks (four sacks for -20 yards were generated). They have been up and down in this phase of the game in recent weeks - to date, Tampa is ranked 19th in the NFL averaging 262.4 net yards passing per game, with nine passing scores given out vs. three interceptions and nine sacks generated to date. Over the past three weeks (two games) they have averaged just 15.9 fantasy points allowed per game to opposing quarterbacks (fifth-least in the NFL); with 21.2 fantasy points given out to opposing wide receivers (11th-least in the NFL) and an average of 10 fantasy points allowed per game to opposing tight ends (fifth-most in the league). This looks like a neutral matchup for the resurgent Kaepernick and company.
