Week 5: vs Buffalo Bills

Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. Matthew Stafford shook of his poor play vs. Green Bay (22/34 for 246 yards passing, zero TDs and two interceptions thrown) to slice up the Jets in Week 4 (24/34 for 293 yards passing, two TDs and zero interceptions thrown, with four sacks taken for -21 yards). With Calvin Johnson operating well below 90% healthy (ankle woes, two targets for 2/12/0 receiving), Golden Tate (10 targets for 8/116/0 receiving), Jeremy Ross (two for 2/65/1) and rookie tight end Eric Ebron (four for 3/34/1) all worked to give Stafford some steady hands to throw at on Sunday. Stay tuned to Footballguys.com's Players in the News later this week to see how much practicing Johnson can do, but the Lions showed us last week they can still excel with or without him. The Bills' pass D ranks 25th in the NFL averaging 266.2 net yards passing allowed, with six passing TDs surrendered to date. Otherwise, this is an effective, attacking unit with five interceptions (tied for fifth in the NFL) and 10 sacks (tied-6th) - they are a high-risk, high-reward unit that goes for turnovers aggressively. Ryan Fitzpatrick managed 25/37 for 264 yards, one TD and two interceptions thrown against Buffalo last week, while taking two sacks for -4 yards. Somtimes Stafford gets careless with the ball - he'll have to be smart against the ball-hawking Bills, but if he keeps his head in the game Stafford has a good shot at a decent outing this week.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 2 vs CAR (1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Pettigrew dropped an outlet pass late in the fourth quarter of Detroit's loss at Carolina, with open field in front of him, in his lone passing game involvement this week.

2014 Week 4 vs NYJ (2 / 2 / 19 / 0 rec)

With Joseph Fauria out of the lineup against Jets, the three-headed committee at tight end was down to Pettigrew and rookie Eric Ebron. Pettigrew did not see much action in the passing game and logged two short, non-descript receptions for the game. Pettigrew was on the field for more than 80% of the snaps, his highest of the season, but is simply not a significant factor in the passing game anymore.
