Week 5: at Atlanta Falcons

All TE vs ATL

Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. Kirk Cousins threw the game-winning TD at :26 left in the fourth quarter on Sunday (31/46 for 290 yards passing, one TD and zero interceptions thrown) and also ran in a one-yard TD to lead his team to a key divisional win over Philadelphia and a 2-2 record during the season's opening month. Not too shabby, huh? Pierre Garcon (eight targets for 7/55/1 receiving) hauled in the game-winning score. Ryan Grant saw seven targets for 5/45/0 receiving across from Garcon at wide receiver. However, there was a significant loss, too, as Jordan Reed (eight for 5/37/0) was knocked out of the game due to another concussion - he has a long history of brain traumas, and has missed chunks of seasons to similar injuries in the past. Head coach Jay Gruden provided 'no timetable' Reed's recovery from his latest concussion on Monday, and also revealed that Reed also sprained his ankle and knee (MCL) in Sunday's upset of the Eagles. Gruden said that he was 'concerned' with Reed's health - it doesn't sound like Reed will be active for this game, at least at midweek the chances look dim. Derek Carrier is the next guy up for the Washington tight end stable - they already have Logan Paulsen and Niles Paul on IR, and word at midweek is that DeSean Jackson isn't likely to play in Week Five either. Cousins is swimming uphill against a lot of injuries to teammates right now. The Texans swapped starters midway through the loss to Atlanta, and wound up with 29/57 for 382 yards passing, two TDs and one interception thrown across two passers - at one point they were down 42-0, so part of the big yardage total is due to the fact that the Falcons went into prevent-defense mode partway through the second half (and started pulling starters for rest). Against Atlanta, Dallas managed 22/26 for 220 net yards passing, zero TDs and one interception thrown two weeks ago. To date, the Falcons are ranked 30th in the NFL averaging 305.2 net passing yards allowed per game, with five passing scores handed out vs. four interceptions (tied for ninth in the NFL) and five sacks (tied for 28th in the NFL) generated. This is a good matchup for Cousins, assuming that the 'next men up' for the Redskins at tight end and wide receiver are able to provide him with reliable hands.
