Week 14: vs Chicago Bears
All TE vs CHI
Mark and Joe say: Neutral matchup. Matthew Stafford struggled at Chicago back in Week Four, posting 23/36 for 213 yards passing, zero TDs and two interceptions thrown, with two sacks taken for -16 yards. Marvin Jones (seven targets for 5/74/0 receiving) led the team in receiving during that game - since then, Golden Tate has come back to the forefront of the receiving corps (see below).
Last week, at New Orleans, Tate led the Lions with 10 targets for 8/145/1 receiving, while T.J. Jones (not Marvin) was second on the team with four targets for 3/49/0 receiving. Anquan Boldin (six for 4/40/0) and Eric Ebron (six for 4/38/0) were third and fourth as Stafford slung 30/42 for 341 yards passing, two TDs with zero interceptions and two sacks taken for -4 yards en route to a 28-13 win in New Orleans. (Marvin) Jones has a thigh injury that kept him out of the Week 13 game, though he did 'test' the injured limb in pre-game warmups last week. With or without (Marvin) Jones, Stafford looks like he is on a roll.
The Bears' pass defense was not challenged last week as San Francisco's (located in warm-weather Levis' Stadium in Santa Clara) could only muster five completions in sixty minutes of game play during a snow storm. In fact, the 49ers had 39 yards worth of pass completions between Colin Kaepernick (1/5 for four yards before he was benched) and Blaine Gabbert (4/10 for 35 yards) vs. six sacks for -33 yards. San Francisco/Santa Clara had six yards (net) passing at Chicago last week, folks. This pathetic performance by San Francisco/Santa Clara skews the near-term average for Chicago. To date, Chicago ranks sixth in the NFL averaging 220.3 net passing yards allowed per game (also skewed downwards, but less so over 12 games played), with 17 passing scores given out vs. five interceptions (30th in the NFL) and 30 sacks (tied for seventh in the NFL) generated.
This looks like a neutral matchup between divisional foes.
