Week 7: at Los Angeles Rams
All RB vs LAR
FBG says: Neutral matchup. The Cardinals rushing attack was brought back to life last week as Adrian Peterson was on fire in his team debut. Peterson was the workhorse back in this offense, even after only being with the team for a couple of days prior to the game. The Cardinals allotted Peterson 26 carries as he played on nearly 75% of snaps, rushing for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Peterson's day could have been even bigger if a 45-yard run was not called back due to penalty. There were no other relevant running backs for the Cardinals, as even Andre Ellington only played 13 snaps, failing to receive a single touch through the air or on the ground. Left tackle D.J. Humphries returned from injury here too in his first game since Week 1, and he looked very impressive setting up lanes for Peterson on the left side of that offensive line. Having Humphries back is a big improvement to an otherwise piecemealed, struggling Cardinals offensive line.
The Rams run defense would have had a solid outing last week if not for allowing a 75-yard touchdown run to Leonard Fournette on their first snap last week. Take that long run away, and the Rams held Fournette to an average of only 2.8 yards per attempt. Aaron Donald is one of the best defensive tackles in football, and Michael Brockers has also played well this season--making the interior of this Rams defensive line a very formidable one. However, the Rams problem this season has been with their defensive ends, as they continuously lose contain on running plays, allowing big yards on runs to the outside. This was the case on Fournette's 75-yard scamper last week, as the defensive ends lost contain while missing gap assignments to allow Fournette to get into the second level. The Cardinals offensive line is not a great match for this solid defensive interior of the Rams. However, with Humphries back at left tackle and a competent running back in Peterson, we will have to wait and see if the Cardinals can repeat such a unicorn of a rushing performance compared to what we were used to seeing thus far this season.
