Week 7: vs New Orleans Saints

Mark and Joe say: Great matchup. The Lions' coach was typically vague about Calvin Johnson's status in his Monday remarks, stating 'The fact of the matter is I leave it up to the doctors,' Caldwell said. 'Those are the professionals. They know exactly what it takes, what can be done.' However, it seems unlikely that Johnson will be able to go in Week 7 - fantasy owners will need to monitor his practice participation in's Players in the News as the weekend approaches (and remember that coach Caldwell is notorious for misleading statements about injuries in order to complicate opposing coaches' game plans). Without Johnson last weekend, Matthew Stafford threw 19/33 for 185 yards, one TD and zero interceptions during a game in which the Lions' D squashed the Vikings' offense (Teddy Bridgewater was sacked eight times, intercepted three times, and caused to fumble once) on the way to a 17-3 Detroit victory. Golden Tate saw the most targets last week (12 for 7/44/0 receiving), while Theo Riddick handled six targets for 5/75/1, accounting for Stafford's only TD throw. Joique Bell (three for 2/23/0) and Eric Ebron (two for 2/23/0) helped move the chains in the passing phase of the game. It wasn't spectacular, but the Lions got the job done last week. This week, a more powerful offense will come to Ford Field and challenge the Lions' defense, so Stafford will likely need to do more to keep up with Drew Brees and company. Speaking of the Saints, they bring the league's 25th-ranked pass D to this dance, currently averaging 267.6 net passing yards allowed per game, with a hefty nine passing scores given up over five games vs. a paltry one interception (tied for dead last in the NFL) and just six sacks (tied for 29th in the NFL). Mike Glennon hit this group for 19/32 yielding 248 net passing yards, two TDs and one interception thrown (with one sack for -1 yards) during Week 5 and Tony Romo posted 22/29 for 255 net yards, three TDs and zero interceptions with one sack taken for -7 yards back in Week 4. This is not a good pass D, folks. Advantage, Detroit.
