Week 3: at Miami Dolphins

All QB vs MIA

FBG says: Neutral matchup. That was quite a clinic Derek Carr and company put on last week. Facing an imposing Broncos pass rush and coverage unit, Carr and Jon Gruden opted for a quick-hitting attack that sought out seams down the field, particularly against the Broncos' ho-hum safeties. The results (29 of 32 completions for 288 yards) were strong, and Amari Cooper was finally worked in appropriately. Cooper put on a show, catching all 10 targets in front of the Broncos' playmaking cornerbacks. When he's moved around the formation and utilized heavily, Cooper is a dangerous playmaker as well as a solid security blanket. With Jared Cook coming on as a seam-stretcher and Seth Roberts still a tough redzone cover, this crew should be on the rise. Carr is the x-factor, in that he's polished and accurate enough to take what defenses give him but inconsistent overall. He remains skittish in the pocket and struggles when forced to hold the ball. A dynamic pass rush can shake him all game, and even with Cooper humming along, there may not be much opportunity for his weapons to be explosive. The Dolphins have rewired their pass defense this year, hoping to inject more of a playmaking element into it. Edge rusher Robert Quinn was brought in, while free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was drafted in Round 1. And the results so far have been great - through two weeks they've intercepted five passes, and last week registered three sacks while living in the Jets backfield. Still, those numbers were built on the backs of matchups with Marcus Mariota/Blaine Gabbert and Sam Darnold, the youngest quarterback to start in the Super Bowl era. Major tests lie ahead, and they'll tell much more about this unit's progress than what we've seen thus far.
