Week 5: at Detroit Lions
Mark and Joe say: Bad matchup. Kyle Orton was elevated to the Bills' starting job at quarterback as EJ Manuels' game slipped as September moved along - Orton is a savvy veteran who has started for Chicago, Denver, Kansas City and Dallas in his day (he's 35-35-0 as a starter, with 1,326/2,265 for a 58.5 completion %, with 15,019 yards passing, 83 TDs and 59 interceptions thrown during his career). We'll see how his chemistry is with wideouts Sammy Watkins (32 targets for 17/197/2 receiving this season), Robert Woods (29 for 11/119/0) and Mike Williams (16 for 7/134/1) beginning this Sunday.
The Bills' management gave Orton a tough draw for his first game, facing the hard-charging Lions' D - Detroit is ranked sixth in the league with 10 sacks over four games (Buffalo is tied for 11th in the NFL with six sacks given out to date), and they have generated three interceptions so far (tied for 13th), while averaging 186.5 net passing yards allowed per game (second in the NFL), with four passing scores handed over. Aaron Rodgers was limited to 16/27 for 147 net passing yards, one TD and zero interceptions two weeks ago (sacked twice for -15 yards); Geno Smith eked out 17/33 for 204 net yards, one TD and one interception vs. Detroit last week while being sacked twice for -5 yards.
This looks like a bad week to start a new approach at quarterback.
