Week 4: at Oakland Raiders

All WR vs OAK

FBG says: Great matchup. That was a shot in the arm that Baker Mayfield gave the Browns' stagnant, suffering offense last Thursday, and it looked to be a long-term one. Mayfield threw with confidence and zip, hitting moving targets and throwing guys open all night. There weren't many splash plays to speak of, but Mayfield did make a few nice downfield throws, including a great 29-yarder to Jarvis Landry to set up the tying touchdown. It's not as if there's no weaponry - Antonio Callaway showcased his elite speed in Week 3, while David Njoku still looms as a seam threat, and he made a pair of nice plays with Mayfield. As the rookie picks up steam, the offense will open up more and more, and his targets will have more opportunity to make things happen downfield. Landry's role as a mid-level route-runner also looks shinier now, as Mayfield boasts far more touch on his throws than Tyrod Taylor. All in all, expect a step forward for this unit, though not a monstrous one. Mayfield didn't look particularly mistake-prone in his debut, but the offense should stay close to the vest for a while. The Raiders pass defense is rapidly descending into the NFL's basement. They were already struggling mightily in 2017, with Khalil Mack on board, allowing the league's fifth-most net yards per attempt. And with Mack gone, they've looked even more helpless against the pass. Mack's departure has left no pass rushers of note beyond linebacker Bruce Irvin, who boasts good quickness but doesn't collapse opposing game plans. No one else on the roster has ever shown the ability to press the pocket. Perhaps explosive rookie Arden Key, who's starting to see significant snaps, can help going forward, but it's an exceptionally tall task. Behind them, -year-old slot man Leon Hall has been the lone bright spot for a secondary that severely lacks in coverage ability. Free safety Marcus Gilchrist has been particularly beatable down the middle, while second-year cornerback Gareon Conley is being picked on by quarterbacks. Few NFL units have more potential to be scorched downfield on a weekly basis.
