Week 3: vs Denver Broncos

All WR vs DEN

FBG says: Tough matchup. At least Joe Flacco is healthy and throwing again. After struggling through much of 2017 - the second-worst season of his career - with a nagging back problem, Flacco again looks confident and capable, averaging 29 completions and 306 yards a game thus far. That said, he's not finding many opportunities go downfield here in 2018. Flacco spent most of last Thursday night peppering his backs and tight ends with targets, unable to find much deep despite 55 attempts. It's good to see him connecting downfield on occasion, of course, and new Raven John Brown fits that pattern beautifully. One of the league's speediest players, Brown is healthy and consistently creating mismatches for Flacco on deep balls. But beyond him, there's little dynamism in this group. Michael Crabtree looks like a plodding possession guy at 31, and Willie Snead is a nominal No. 3. The silver lining, though, is that Flacco clearly loves this batch of tight ends. Rookie Mark Andrews has shown well as a redzone threat, while Maxx Williams and blocker Nick Boyle are capable of exploiting low-athleticism linebacking groups. In a disheartening Week 2 display, the Broncos were picked surgically apart by Derek Carr and the Raiders passing game. Carr completed 29 of his 32 throws last Sunday, playing pitch-and-catch with Amari Cooper, who caught all 10 of his targets. That's not a death knell, of course. The Broncos did a fine job corralling the Raiders' other receivers - Jordy Nelson and Martavis Bryant combined for just 60 yards on 6 catches. But there are newfound deficiencies in place here. Bradley Roby, in particular, looks like a poor substitute for an in-his-prime Aqib Talib. Both Roby and Chris Harris gave up key catches to Cooper, and neither looks poised to keep this unit as dominant as it's been in recent years. It didn't help that the pass rush was taken out of the game last week and that the linebackers and safeties still struggle against tight ends. They've now allowed 7 of their last 17 opposing tight ends to top 70 yards, with splash plays all over the field. There will be some degree of turnaround for sure, but this may not be the shutdown unit of old.
