Week 12: vs Oakland Raiders

All RB vs OAK

FBG says: Good matchup. Surely the Jets made Le'Veon Bell their prized free-agent addition with more in mind than this (3.2 yards per carry, 51 per game). Like the rest of the Jets offense, Bell looks stuck in quicksand and has made virtually no impact - his longest run of the season went for all of 19 yards. The team could get the same production from a cheap reserve like Bilal Powell, but here we are. At least Bell has been consistent with his ineffectiveness, managing to land below 4.0 yards per rush in 9 of his 10 games. Of course, he's not solely to blame for this lost season. The Jets still field one of football's worst front lines, ranked 27th by Footballguys' Matt Bitonti with a C+ run-blocking grade. Veteran center Ryan Kalil was mercifully placed on injured reserve this week after muddling through his worst season as a pro. He joins guards Brian Winters and Kelechi Osemele on the shelf, leaving black holes throughout the line. Bell should continue to smash into stacked fronts this Sunday, and it's looking less and less likely he'll erupt. This just isn't the situation to responsibly project any real type of turnaround. At times here in 2019, the Raiders run defense has been surprisingly competent. But a closer look shows their share of liability against strong ground games. The Raiders have stifled the likes of David Montgomery and Ty Johnson, yet given up huge, efficient lines to Dalvin Cook (16 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown) and Melvin Gordon (22 for 108 and 1). Last Sunday, the Bengals' ho-hum rushing attack produced 6.4 yards per rush against them, with Joe Mixon racking up 86 of his own. The Raiders are built solidly up front, where tackle P.J. Hall is enjoying a standout season and Jonathan Hankins still stout as a run-stuffer. But there are real issues behind them; this linebacking corps is sorely lacking in big-play ability without Vontaze Burfict. New signee Preston Brown could start immediately, but he was a huge liability as a one-speed tackler in Cincinnati. As a result, quick-footed runners who do reach the second level should continue to find and create room. On the bright side, the Raiders do project to have their way with the Jets' patchwork front line and to hound a struggling Le'Veon Bell.
