Week 14: vs Detroit Lions

All WR vs DET

FBG says: Good matchup. Although the Minnesota Vikings struggled through the air last Monday night, they remain one of the NFL's most efficient passing attacks in spite of their low volume. Considering the Vikings have one of the league's most run-heavy offenses, Kirk Cousins has been extremely impressive in his little action airing the ball out, especially when his receiving corps is at full-strength. The Vikings have been without Adam Thielen in recent weeks, as he recovers from a hamstring injury that has hampered him for the better part of two months, which has lead to increased volume for Stefon Diggs and Kyle Rudolph through the air. Diggs' increased volume has not directly translated into production in recent weeks, but his underlying metrics are promising, and he should see significant improvement in the near future. Kyle Rudolph, although an afterthought early in the season, is finally making his presence felt, especially around the end zone, with at least five targets and a touchdown in five out of his last six games. Should Thielen return to action in Week 14, the overall efficiency of this unit should spike back up to near-league-high levels; however, the target totals for players like Diggs and Rudolph may decrease slightly to make room for the top-end pass-catcher. Detroit's pass defense has defended the seventh-most pass attempts this season, allowing stunningly-high efficiency totals through the air. The Lions have allowed the 3rd-most passing yards this season, while also permitting a 25-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio, one of the league's worst. They have allowed multiple touchdown passes in 9 out of 12 games this season, including a 338-yard and 3-touchdown performance to Mitchell Trubisky and the Bears' struggling passing-attack last week. The Detroit pass defense is one of the league's worst from top-to-bottom, with only one significant play-maker taking the field regularly. Trey Flowers, the team's marquee offseason signing, has recently found a groove pressuring opposing quarterbacks, with five sacks in his last five games. Unfortunately, Flowers has received little support elsewhere, as many of the team's previously-strong pass-defenders have seen their production tail off in 2019. Darius Slay, a cornerback that was previously hailed as one of the league's best coverage players, has fallen off significantly this season, with his reputation far exceeding his on-field production. Overall, the Lions' pass defense is one of the league's worst, and in a tough matchup against the Vikings' strong passing attack, they should be overmatched in Week 14. Expect Kirk Cousins and company to get back on track after a poor showing on Monday Night Football last week, as they should shred the Lions through the air this weekend.

Recent Game Summaries

2019 Week 11 vs DEN (9 / 6 / 35 / 0 rec)

Johnson has been the biggest beneficiary of Thielen being hurt and was the 3rd leading receiver for the Vikings this week. He caught 6 of his 9 targets for 35 yards and has helped immensely for a team that lacks a true 3rd receiver. Johnson was the Vikings 7th round pick out of Colorado State and has filled the spot they had hope Laquon Treadwell was going to. His longest catch went for 9 yards this week and he should continue to see a role in the offense even when Thielen returns.

2019 Week 9 vs KC (2 / 1 / 4 / 1 rec)

It was a game of backups stepping up in the offense when the stars were not shining. Johnson caught 1 of his 2 targets this week for a 4-yard touchdown. IT was the Vikings first score of the game and tied the score at 7-7. Johnson ran a slant that was shut down by the linebacker in the middle of the field and then shifted his route up into the end zone and found a void. The linebacker stayed in his zone and Johnson was wide open in the space behind him for the easy touchdown. Cousins delivered a strike to his chest on the 3rd and goal play. There was not much else to Johnson this week, even with Thielen out and Diggs struggling.

2019 Week 8 vs WAS (2 / 2 / 27 / 0 rec)

The Vikings have been without a true third receiver almost this entire season. They resigned Laquon Treadwell and have not seen any sort of return and do not have many other options. Enter Johnson who had his 1st career touchdown last week but followed it up with a quiet game this week. He caught both of his targets and had a long catch and run of 16 yards this week. He is not going to put up flashy numbers with Thielen, Diggs, and Cook taking the majority of the touches in front of him, but he is proving to be a nice possession receiver and good third option when needed.

2019 Week 7 vs DET (8 / 4 / 40 / 1 rec)

The Vikings have been without a 3rd receiver for much of the season and have watched guys either get hurt or be ineffective. Enter Johnson this week who stepped up after Thielen left the game early due to a hamstring injury. Johnson caught 4 of his 8 targets and capped off a long drive with a 1-yard touchdown catch. Johnson started on the right side of the field and ran his route behind the line of scrimmage. Cousins knew they were in man coverage and the linebacker had no chance to get across the field and make any sort of play. Johnson flared out into the flat and caught the easy 1-yard touchdown for the first score of his career. He added a long 19-yard catch as well and has been a productive 7th round pick for the Vikings.
