2018 Week 2 vs KC (5 / 5 / 138 / 1 rec)

James was the forgotten man in this matchup, by the Chiefs. In the first half alone James had 4 receptions, 92 yards, and1 touchdown. There was concern with James' usage coming into the game with Vance McDonald returning to action, but James was more involved. James finished the day catching all five of his targets and making the most of his spot on the target totem pole.

Unfortunately, Vance McDonald was injured, but fortunately the Steelers have another tight end to step right in and has good chemistry with Roethlisberger. The best skill of Jesse James, which he displayed in this game, is his ability to find the soft spot in zone coverage and provide a big target for Roethlisberger. James does not display a lot after the catch, but he is a reliable target.

Early 2nd quarter on a 3rd and 10, James was left uncovered and hauled in an easy 19-yard reception. Late 2nd quarter on a 3rd and goal, James ran a slant route for a 4-yard touchdown reception. On the play, James found an open spot in the middle of the end zone and showed good concentration completing the reception. Jesse James was injured on the first play from scrimmage with what looked to be a mild ankle injury. The training staff was seen tapping his ankles on the sidelines. James returned to start the second series of the game and finished with four receptions for 27 yards. Late second quarter, James ran a curl-route for a 12-yard reception. Early fourth quarter, James caught a quick pass for an 8-yard reception.

Early first quarter, James was targeted in the end zone but could not complete the reception as he was locked in tight coverage. Early fourth quarter on 3rd and goal, James able to peel off his block as he was left wide open in the middle of the end zone for an easy one-yard touchdown reception.

James had some decent catches but also had one inexcusable drop. Ben Roethlisberger doesn't look for him a whole lot, and as the Steelers seem to be happy to drop a lot of screens and short passes to LeVeon Bell, that may not change.

James was invisible in the Steelers passing game until the final minutes of the game. James converted a short crosser route where he was left alone to convert a third down in the red zone. James, the lumbering athlete, even managed yards-after-catch on the play. This week marked the fourth game of the season where James caught one or fewer passes.

Jesse James finished with a career-high ten receptions for a career-best 97 yards. He was remarkably efficient securing 10 of his 12 targets. James dominated in the short to intermediate passing game with crossing-routes and slants. The tight end was one of the main beneficiaries of the offense playing from behind for most of the second half.

James got one short catch early and couldn't haul in a red zone target. He was the target on another red zone play, but couldn't haul in the ball, and he was the target on an end zone interception. He's clearly behind Ladarius Green in the pecking order now.
