Summary

Kendall Hunter is part of a crowded field of backup running backs in San Francisco. Hunter has more experience than Marcus Lattimore, Carlos Hyde, or LaMichael James, and may therefore be the favorite to win the number two job behind Frank Gore, at least for this season, but the uncertainty majorly detracts from his fantasy value. When you draft an NFL backup, it's usually with the idea that he'll become the featured runner if the starter is injured. In Hunter's case, there is much room for doubt about that. Marcus Lattimore and Carlos Hyde, each drafted by the 49ers within the past two years, may both be more talented than Hunter. In any case, they are talented enough to push for major playing time in a committee if Gore becomes unavailable. Hunter is projected to get enough touches, in a backup role, to serve as a fantasy RB5 (meaning that you'd have to be pretty desperate to start him). But he has less upside potential than other backs with similar projections -- because even if he's the primary backup when Gore is healthy, he may not be the primary runner if Gore is injured. That makes Hunter one of the less enticing handcuff candidates available. (May 28)

49ers | LaMichael James may be odd man out at RB (Mon Jul 21, 12:00 AM) - San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James could have trouble making the roster this year, according to ESPN.com's Bill Williamson. Williamson believes RB Frank Gore, RB Carlos Hyde, RB Marcus Lattimore, RB Kendall Hunter and FB Bruce Miller will make the roster.

Our View: James could make the team based on his return ability. He's not going to get many carries if he makes the final roster, but James could catch a few passes as a change-of-pace back.
