49ers | Want to re-sign Kendall Hunter (Sat Jul 26, 09:44 PM) - San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) is entering the final year of his current contract, but general manager Trent Baalke said the team would like to re-sign him.

Our View: Hunter has talent as a runner and receiver out of the backfield, but injuries have held him back as a pro. The 49ers are stacked at the running back position already, so finding room for Hunter could be difficult. Hunter's career might end up reading "what might have been?" when it's all said and done.

49ers | Kendall Hunter update (Sat Jul 26, 01:18 PM) - Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the Friday, July 25, practice, according to a source. Hunter will subsequently miss the entire 2014 season.

Our View: Terrible news for a talented player here. Hunter has had trouble staying healthy as a pro, and this latest setback crushes the dynasty value he had. The 49ers will move forward with rookie Carlos Hyde as the primary backup behind Frank Gore. They also have Marcus Lattimore, but he's struggling to come back from the knee injury he suffered in 2012.

49ers | Kendall Hunter injured (Fri Jul 25, 07:10 PM) - San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) suffered a knee injury during practice Friday, July 25. He was able to walk off the field on his own and did not appear to have a limp.

Our View: Well it seems like the Niners dodged a bullet but that would certainly open things up for most of the rest of the backs, Carlos Hyde specifically. Frank Gore remains the starter here anyway, and we rate him as an RB2. Hunter is the handcuff right now but if an injury occurs, we give the edge to Hyde. As long as Gore is around, there isn't much value in the backup here otherwise.

49ers | LaMichael James may be odd man out at RB (Mon Jul 21, 12:00 AM) - San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James could have trouble making the roster this year, according to's Bill Williamson. Williamson believes RB Frank Gore, RB Carlos Hyde, RB Marcus Lattimore, RB Kendall Hunter and FB Bruce Miller will make the roster.

Our View: James could make the team based on his return ability. He's not going to get many carries if he makes the final roster, but James could catch a few passes as a change-of-pace back.
