Week 3: at New York Jets

Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. Jay Cutler was limited for most of the game against San Francisco, but a series of late turnovers fueled his stat line by providing easily-reached red-zone opportunities. When the dust settled on the Bears' comeback win, he'd pitched 23/34 for 176 yards passing, four TDs and zero interceptions. He did all the above after taking a vicious crown-of-the-helmet hit to his chest, which he described after the game as 'feeling like my chest hit my backbone'. It was quite a display of toughness on Cutler's part. Brandon Marshall powered through a sore ankle to haul in 5/48/3 (eight targets) on the night, while Martellus Bennett handled eight targets for 7/37/1 receiving. Alshon Jeffery, also nursing a sore ankle, managed six targets for 3/47/0 receiving - the Bears' walking wounded got the job done last week, but stay tuned to's Players in the News for their practice status later in the week as both Marshall and Jeffery were clearly gimpy during the game. The Jets' pass D is ranked 17th after two games, averaging 221.5 net passing yards allowed per game, with five passing scores given up vs. zero interceptions generated (they have six sacks to date, tied for sixth in the NFL). Last week, Aaron Rodgers torched this secondary for 25/42 yielding 310 net passing yards, three TDs and zero interceptions (four sacks taken for -36 yards). Once the Jets were past the rookie Derek Carr in Week 1, their secondary was exposed by Rodgers and company. Cutler and company have a good matchup, and as the Jets' rush D is so stout, look for Cutler and whoever is healthy enough to take the field on Sunday to have a solid game against the suspect Jets' secondary.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 1 vs BUF (5 / 2 / 21 / 0 rec)

Holmes has found a place in Trestman's offense. The veteran receiver is learning how to be successful playing out of the slot. Holmes was on the field for 29 snaps, 19 of which were pass plays. So Holmes was Cutler's target on nearly 26 percent of the pass plays he was present for. Not bad for a No. 3 receiver who is learning a new offense. Cutler appears to like Holmes on those quick-burst slant routes across the middle, and Holmes hasn't had any issues hauling in the lasers Cutler has fired. While Holmes hasn't done enough to warrant a spot on your fantasy roster, pay attention, because one day very soon that all will change.

2014 Week 2 vs SF (2 / 2 / 20 / 0 rec)

Looking back at the box score, it's somewhat surprising that Holmes only received two targets. Holmes started the game as the Bears' No. 3 wideout. He finished the game with two receptions for 20 yards, one of which went for a first down. With Marshall and Jeffery hampered by injuries, you would have thought Holmes would have been Cutler's go-to guy. He played in 74 percent of the offensive snaps, so the opportunities were there for him to create separation and find space. One thing to keep in mind is that Holmes only signed with the Bears just before Week 3 of the preseason. He's still relatively new to this offense. Perhaps he and Cutler just haven't found their rhythm yet, because if Holmes isn't getting targeted when Marshall and Jeffery aren't 100 percent, when exactly will he get targets? Holmes isn't worth of a roster spot until Cutler is willing to find him in the end zone. So stay away until then.
