Week 7: at Los Angeles Chargers

All TE vs LAC

FBG says: Tough matchup. Like their Week 6 opponent, the Giants, Denver will enter Sunday with an injury-ravaged receiving corps. Emmanuel Sanders and WR5 Isaiah McKenzie will sit out with ankle sprains, and Demaryius Thomas could hobble a bit after a minor leg injury of his own last Sunday. Assuming he doesn't suffer a setback, Thomas will likely dominate Trevor Siemian's attention on all levels of the field, and the Week 7 success of this unit will rest upon how Thomas manages heavy coverage. It's worth noting that he's already a posted strong game (5 receptions for 67 yards) against this Chargers defense while in the primary coverage of Casey Hayward, and that he shredded 2016 All-Pro Janoris Jenkins (10 for 133) last Sunday. But this week he'll have to succeed without much help across the field. Going further, with Sanders down, Siemian will have to try new things - the Thomas/Sanders connection has soaked up 48% of his targets thus far. Tight end A.J. Derby could be an increased option from the slot; he looked outstanding 2 weeks ago, catching 4 passes for 75 yards and an impressive touchdown. The Chargers secondary has quickly developed into one of the league's best, even with stud cornerback Jason Verrett out for the season. Casey Hayward flirts weekly with true shutdown status; he's not unbeatable, but he's a ballhawk who punishes quarterback-receiver connections. Trevor Williams has been a pleasant surprise in Verrett's place, and free safety Jahleel Addae continues to flash playmaking ability. It's a strong unit bolstered even further by a talented pass rush. Joey Bosa in particular is rounding into Defensive Player of the Year form, with five sacks and two quarterback strips through six games. And he's actually been even more productive at pressuring the passer than the sack totals indicate.
