Week 7: vs San Francisco 49ers

All RB vs SF

FBG says: Tough matchup. Washington's interim head coach, Bill Callahan, explicitly stated his displeasure with the Redskins' propensity to throw the ball so much early in the season. Callahan intends to have the Redskins establish the run week-in and week-out, which will likely lead to a heavy dose of Adrian Peterson in the backfield while Derrius Guice rehabs back from a knee injury. Callahan's first game at the helm came at the perfect time, right before a matchup with the tanking Miami Dolphins. For just the second time all season, the Redskins played with a lead throughout the game, which enabled a run-heavy game script for Washington. Peterson finished the game with 118 yards on 23 carries against one of the NFL's worst defenses. His 118 yards from this single game are more than half of his rushing total for the entire 2019 season. Washington's offensive line is one of the NFL's worst run-blocking units, and they will likely struggle against any league-average run defense they face this season. Last week's 100-yard rushing game for Adrian Peterson was an anomaly against a horrendous defense. This week, the Redskins face the San Francisco 49ers, one of the NFL's best run defenses, and they will almost certainly be overmatched in the trenches. The San Francisco 49ers have one of the NFL's best defenses in every facet of the game. Against the run, San Francisco ranks 11th in the NFL in yards-per-carry allowed, and they've only allowed 1 rushing touchdown so far this year. The strength of their defense is undeniably the defensive line. Arik Armstead and Nick Bosa are two elite run-stopping defensive linemen. DeForest Buckner has typically been one of the league's better run defenders on the interior, but he has struggled so far in 2019. Surrounded by talented players commanding significant attention from opposing offensive lines, Buckner should turn it around and increase his contributions to an already-elite defensive line. The 49ers' linebacking corps is the only weakness on this team against the run. Fred Warner and Kwon Alexander have typically been better in coverage than they have been against the run, and 2019 is no different. Both players have struggled to fill the gaps and stuff the run this season, but safety Jaquiski Tartt has picked up the slack. Tartt is a safety that thrives in the box and around the line of scrimmage, and his presence against the run has helped mask San Francisco's shortcomings at linebacker. In total, the 49ers have an exceptionally talented run defense that typically faces very little rushing volume while they play with a lead. Expect the 49ers to shut down Adrian Peterson and the Washington Redskins on the ground here in week seven in one of the biggest mismatches of the week in the trenches.

Recent Game Summaries

2019 Week 1 vs PHI (10 / 18 / 0 rush, 3 / 3 / 20 / 0 rec)

Derrius Guice was unable to get on track today as the run game was kept in check. He had ten rushes but only averaged 1.8 yards per carry. Washington's offensive line loss the battle in the trenches and Washington's offense was finding more success through the air. This game was close for over half the game but with so few opportunities in the second half, the offense didn't do much of anything. Derrius was involved in the passing game as well with three receptions. It's clear that he will be a big part of the offense, but they'll need better o-line play for Derrius to make his presence felt. It should also be noted that he didn't quite look like he fully has his burst back so that is something to keep an eye on.
