Summary

Washington thought they solved the running game's problems a season ago by drafting Samaje Perine, a powerful interior runner who left Oklahoma as the school's all-time leading rusher. Things didn't pan out as Perine struggled to maintain the coaches' confidence, the offensive line failed to gain a consistent push, and the coaches failed to innovate. The result was a rushing attack that gained just 1,448 yards (3.6 per carry) and ranked 27th. Rather than banging its head against a wall, Washington went back to the running back well in this year's draft, selecting Derrius Guice in the 2nd round. Guice is a compact (5'11", 218 lbs.) runner who dominated SEC opponents for three seasons, playing alongside Leonard Fournette for two years. Much like Fournette, Guice's potential is best seen in his sophomore tape, when he led the SEC with 1,387 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns. Injuries robbed Guice of his prior explosiveness last season, but he still managed 1,251 yards and 11 touchdowns. Guice was arguably better than Fournette when healthy, and coming off an injury. The powerhouse wasn't asked to catch the ball at LSU, but he displayed good instincts in pre-draft workouts. That said, Guice will play mainly on first and second downs to start his career because Chris Thompson has 3rd down duties locked down. Unless you're worried about Guice's penchant for video games, he's among the most intriguing fantasy options in a stellar rookie running back group. (May 20)
