News you need to know

From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Sep 17): Grant was a handful for the Patriots defense as a receiver out of the backfield, and the Jaguars should continue to use him more after forgetting about him in Week 1. He'll be a deep PPR flex play if Leonard Fournette can't go against the Titans in Week 3, and he might retain value even after Fournette is back.

Week 3: vs Tennessee Titans

All RB vs TEN

FBG says: Neutral matchup. The Jaguars were just fine without Leonard Fournette last week as they poured it on the Patriots with a very efficient offensive attack. It was certainly a pass-heavy game script last week as Jaguars running backs were afforded only 17 total carries. T.J. Yeldon, the primary backup to Fournette, led the charge with a respectable 58 yards on only 10 carries. Corey Grant was mixed in on the ground last week but is not a threat to significant rushing snaps as his skills set him up as a playmaker in the passing offense. Blake Bortles yet again flashed his mobility as he rushed six times for 35 yards. Bortles has been known to add some rushing upside throughout his career, and following a 45-yard rushing game in Week 1, he is starting the season off in great shape to add a few yards on the ground for this rushing offense. Leonard Fournette was inactive after missing practice all week, but he was reportedly running at full speed on Friday. Keep an eye on his practice status throughout this week. A return by Fournette immediately devalues both Yeldon and Grant. Left tackle Cam Robinson suffered a torn ACL last week and will miss the remainder of the season. Josh Wells will replace him, which should drop this offensive line from a top tier to average unit at best. The Titans run defense was not as effective as they should have been last week against a troubled Texans offensive line. The Titans allowed the Texans combination of rushers to average 5.7 yards per attempt with a few chunk plays mixed in. While the Titans are one of only seven teams to not allow a rushing touchdown through Week 2, they are the worst amongst those teams in yards per rushing attempt allowed (4.9). The Titans linebackers, particularly Wesley Woodyard and Will Compton, have been effective against the run. Jurrell Casey and DaQuan Jones have played well up front, but the depth outside of them is suspect on this defensive line. This run defense as a whole has overall been sufficient, but they have lacked any single big playmaker to step up outside of Jurrell Casey. Without Cam Robinson, the Jaguars offensive line may struggle at first here. If also without Leonard Fournette, the Titans will get the definite nod in this matchup.

Recent Game Summaries

2018 Week 2 vs NE (4 / 13 / 0 rush, 7 / 6 / 56 / 0 rec)

Grant rotated with Yeldon on the day and was extremely effective as a receiver out of the backfield in this game. He checked in on the first drive and on his first snap caught a check down after play action and got upfield for 15 yards and a first down. He had a huge 3rd and 7 conversion in the redzone on a Texas route out of the backfield later in the game. He received the few carries the Jaguars ran from under center (they played in shotgun most of the game) but none of his carries were especially productive. While Grant has been a manufactured touch player to this point, he did make some nice plays within the flow of the offense in this game.

2018 Week 1 vs NYG (1 / 3 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Entered the game on the first drive in a split backfield set with Fournette. Ran a quick swing route and made the catch for a couple of yards. Really only used as a decoy in the second half, with his occasional snaps mainly leading to play action fakes. The Jaguars used him as a second RB in their two back shotgun package on just one play. He simply was not involved in the gameplan from a manufactured touch standpoint from this week and got almost no traditional RB looks even after Fournette went down. His usage will be interesting to monitor, especially next week against New England - whom he burned on manufactured touches in the teams' AFC Championship Game meeting last year.

Jaguars | Leonard Fournette won't play in Week 2 (Sun Sep 16, 02:29 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette (hamstring) will not play in the Week 2 game against the New England Patriots, a source said Sunday, Sept. 16. RBs T.J. Yeldon and Corey Grant are expected to serve as the Jaguars' main running backs.

Our View: TJ Yeldon is a solid RB2 play against the Patriots today on this news. Grant has some explosiveness and could be a deep league add with a strong game.
