Week 9: at San Francisco 49ers

Mark and Joe say: Tough matchup. Austin Davis threw 21/42 for 236 yards, one TD and one interception vs. San Francisco three weeks ago, and took five sacks for -20 yards. Since then, he's lost promising wideout Brian Quick and starting LT Jake Long for the season. Given he took five sacks with Long in the saddle three weeks ago, this matchup looks grim for Davis. He was rocked for seven sacks and -44 yards at Kansas City last week, and travels to San Francisco for this game. 15/25 for 160 yards, one TD and one interception were his totals at Kansas City last week. Kenny Britt (five targets for 2/52/0 receiving) and Stedman Bailey (three for 2/33/0) were Davis top receivers last week - Lance Kendricks handled the score with one target for 1/1/1. Yawn. The 49ers have allowed an average of 221.1 net passing yards per game this year (eighth in the NFL), with 13 passing scores offset by seven interceptions (tied for 13th in the NFL), and 12 sacks generated to date (23rd in the NFL). Last time around the block, Peyton Manning blasted this group for 22/26 yielding 318 net yards, four TDs and zero interceptions - but Austin Davis is no Peyton Manning. Advantage, San Francisco.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 7 vs SEA (1 / 1 / 30 / 0 rec)

Givens has been a forgotten man in this offense, but he finally got back on the field, and made a big contribution late in the game. On what turned out to be the game-winning TD drive, Givens lined up in the slot, ran forward, and then slanted across the field and caught a perfectly thrown 30 yard pass right over the defender and into Givens hands. Whether Givens can crack the lineup again remains to be seen, but this is a guy who made a lot of big plays two years ago, and it's a shame to see him hit the bench so that the Rams can continue to throw to Austin Pettis and waste time trying to use the miscast Tavon Austin as a slot receiver.
