News you need to know
From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Dec 15): Gerhart is the closest thing the Jaguars have to a lead back this week, and they get to host the woeful Titans at home, so he might muster up some points for desperate teams.
Week 16: vs Tennessee Titans
Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. Blake Bortles led the Jaguars in rushing (5/38/0) the last time they played Tennessee (Week Six) - the running backs managed 18/44/1 rushing in their time on the field as a group (Storm Johnson ran in the TD with 10/21/1 rushing to his credit). Since then, Jacksonville has contrived to win two games and sits at 2-12 coming into Week 16. Toby Gerhart (13/54/0 rushing with 2/9/0 receiving) actually led the Jaguars in rushing at Baltimore last week - Denard Robinson has a torn ligament in his foot and is out for the season. Perhaps Gerhart will give some value for his big free agent contract yet. Time will tell if he can hold onto the lead job now that he's got it again. The Titans' rush D averages 139.6 rushing yards allowed per game, worst in the NFL, with 15 rushing scores given up to date (third-most in the NFL). The Jets posted 9/114/1 rushing at Tennessee last week; two weeks ago the allowed 30/142/1 rushing to the Giants. The Jaguars' stable has a good matchup to work with on Thursday night.
Recent Stats and Projections
Recent Game Summaries
2014 Week 13 vs NYG (5 / 7 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)
Gerhart had one carry between the tackles for four yards early on in the game before being tasked with setting up the field goal in the fourth quarter. He ran between the tackles but wasn't really looking to gain yardage, rather focused on protecting the football.
2014 Week 14 vs HOU (5 / 19 / 0 rush, 3 / 2 / 16 / 0 rec)
Gerhart reclaimed some of the touches at running back that had seemingly been surrendered to Denard Robinson over recent weeks. The bigger back had looked sluggish too often after entering the season as a starter, but his burst and power in recent games suggests that he wasn't healthy then. Gerhart repeatedly made impressive plays in different situations when he was given the ball in this game.
2014 Week 15 vs BAL (13 / 54 / 0 rush, 2 / 2 / 9 / 0 rec)
Gerhart reclaimed his starting spot for the Jaguars after Denard Robinson's injury. He began the game very well, showing off patience behind the line of scrimmage and a burst to attack space on the second level. Gerhart continued to run well throughout the four quarters of this game, but his activity dropped off in the second half when the Jaguars moved towards a more pass-oriented approach.
Latest NewsJaguars | Toby Gerhart injures ribs (Thu Dec 18, 11:09 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart (ribs) has been ruled out for the remainder of the team's against the Tennessee Titans Thursday, Dec. 18, with a rib contusion. link to story Jaguars | Toby Gerhart likely will play (Fri Dec 12, 02:51 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart (ankle) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 12, and is listed as probable for Week 15. Our View: Gerhart will lead a three-headed committee at running back for Jacksonville, but his prospects are dim against Baltimore's stingy run defense.
link to story Jaguars | Toby Gerhart a full participant (Thu Dec 11, 04:07 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart (ankle) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 11. Our View: The Jaguars being the Jaguars, Gerhart may get the bulk of the carries now that Denard Robinson is out, but that isn't worth all that much. He's no more than a "what the heck flex" in the neighborhood of a high end RB4.
link to story Jaguars | Jaguars will use three RBs (Wed Dec 10, 05:06 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RBs Toby Gerhart, Jordan Todman and Storm Johnson will all receive playing time since RB Denard Robinson (foot) is out for the season, according to head coach Gus Bradley. Our View: No fantasy owner should be rushing out to get Gerhart (or any of these guys) into the lineup. We like Johnson's ability the best out of these three. The rookie from UCF has a good all-purpose skill set, and he can be used effectively as a runner or receiver out of the backfield.
link to story Jaguars | Toby Gerhart limited (Wed Dec 10, 04:05 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Dec. 10. Our View: Fantasy owners shouldn't be rushing out to get Gerhart now that Denard Robinson is done for the year. He'll split time with Jordan Todman and Storm Johnson.
