From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Sep 29): Gerhart actually looked as good as he has all year, but he also fumbled and appeared to be in a committee backfield with Denard Robinson. The Jaguars offense is so limited that even a feature back would be tough to love, but a committee kills whatever value was there even with a revived, Bortles-led attack.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 2 vs WAS (7 / 8 / 0 rush, 2 / 2 / 9 / 0 rec)

Because the Jaguars fell behind so far, Gerhart only had seven carries in this game. That's not supposed to be the game-plan with Gerhart. He's a volume runner who wants to try and wear down the defense with his physicality. What Gerhart discovered is that it's going to be tough to be effective in Jacksonville when the passing game isn't effective. He wasn't given any space to work in as the defense had no reason to respect the team's receivers and could overwhelm the Jaguars offensive line with ease. It was no surprise that Gerhart had more receiving yards on two touches than he had rushing yards on eight carries.

2014 Week 3 vs IND (9 / 32 / 0 rush, 2 / 2 / 31 / 0 rec)

Gerhart and Robinson were splitting snaps early on, before Gerhart dragged the offense to its first first down of the game midway through the second quarter. Gerhart did that with some strong running before catching a pass in the flat and accelerating past the first down marker. His longest run of the half came when the Jaguars were simply looking to run out the clock. Gerhart didn't find any space until late in the fourth quarter, when he caught a screen pass for a big gain. While his production can largely be blamed on his situation, Gerhart was also fortunate not to have a late fumble when the referees graciously stopped his forward momentum when it appeared that he had already lost the ball.

2014 Week 4 vs SD (10 / 32 / 1 rush, 1 / 1 / 8 / 0 rec)

Gerhart didn't start the game, but he did have the first carry of any back on the field. Gerhart broke a tackle to get into the secondary and was close to a first down, but he fumbled the ball away to the Chargers. That fumble sidelined Gerhart until the second quarter, when he came in at the goalline to score the Jaguars' first touchdown. He was initially stopped short of the line, but then lined up as a fullback to reach his way over the line. That play was then reviewed and overturned, but the Jaguars went back to Gerhart again so he could finally score. Gerhart was used sparingly throughout the rest of the game, but he didn't appear to be punished further for his fumble.

Jaguars | Denard Robinson staying in RB mix (Tue Sep 30, 10:52 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RB Denard Robinson will continue to be involved in a rotation at running back with RB Toby Gerhart, and head coach Gus Bradley said the team strongly believes in Gerhart but will continue to search for the right mix at the position.

Our View: The Jaguars are going to use a two-headed RBBC with Robinson and Gerhart. Robinson is the big-play weapon in the backfield, but his fantasy value is always going to be limited by the offensive structure. We like him as a RB3/flex play in Week 5 against the Steelers.

Jaguars | RB rotation underway (Mon Sep 29, 09:44 AM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RBs Toby Gerhart and Denard Robinson appeared to play in a rotation Sunday, Sept. 28. Gerhart rushed 10 times for 32 yards and Robinson had nine carries for 25 yards.

Our View: The two-man rotation looks like it's here to stay with the Jaguars. Neither is that hot of a fantasy starter, and Gerhart has gone from possibly being looked at as a RB2 with upside to more of a low-end RB3/flex option. Gerhart is likely the better fantasy play between the two because he can punch in touchdowns when the team gets close.

Jaguars | Toby Gerhart ready to go (Sun Sep 28, 02:39 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart (ankle) is active for the team's Week 4 game.

Jaguars | Toby Gerhart probable (Fri Sep 26, 03:35 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart (ankle) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 26, and is listed as probable for Week 4.

Our View: Gerhart is getting healthier, and if Blake Bortles is effective, he might even have some fantasy value this year.

Jaguars | Toby Gerhart a full participant (Thu Sep 25, 05:27 PM) - Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart (ankle) practiced in full for the second straight day Thursday, Sept. 25.

Our View: It looks like Gerhart is going to be close to full strength this week against the Chargers. It's not a great matchup for him, and he's been disappointing to this point of the season. We like Gerhart as a RB2/flex play.
