Week 12: at New York Jets
FBG says: Neutral matchup. Derek Carr continues to look perfectly competent as Jon Gruden's quarterback, completing a career-best 72% of his throws and sitting fourth league-wide in net yards per attempt (factoring in sacks). He has yet to reach 300 yards in a game, but has topped 285 in 4 of his last 5 outings. Still, this passing attack is at its core a safe and sanitized one, and it lacks a truly high-impact element. Carr sends significantly more looks to his backs, tight ends, and slot receivers than to downfield specialist Tyrell Williams, making his top wideout a boom-or-bust fantasy option. Williams hasn't drawn more than four targets in a game since Week 8, and he's fallen below 50 yards twice over that span. The most reliable parts of this attack are found inside, where Darren Waller and slot man Hunter Renfrow have commanded 38% of team targets on the year. Neither are real downfield threats, but they're not needed to be. This will remain an attack centered around dinking and dunking, with the hope being that volume (and perhaps a touchdown) can raise the receivers' fantasy floors. The Jets continue to make strides in pass defense; their youth movement in the secondary is beginning to pay off. Their young safety duo, for example, may already be the league's best, with Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye both excelling. Still, there remain holes throughout this unit, particularly at cornerback. As a result, opponents still draw plenty of big-play opportunity down the field, and receivers are finding the end zone regularly. Each of their last four opponents has scored multiple touchdowns through the air, and it hasn't exactly been a tough stretch of quarterbacks that's done it (Gardner Minshew, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Daniel Jones, Dwayne Haskins). Brian Poole has been a lockdown presence in the slot, but the outside cornerbacks have been subpar at best. The team would love to get back some of its injured pieces for Sunday, but starters Darryl Roberts and Nate Hairston don't move the needle much. It's safe to expect the Raiders to test this group on the boundaries a fair bit, and when they do, top wideout Tyrell Williams should face easier matchups than usual.
