From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Nov 11): Finley had a few plays to grow on and throws to build on vs. Baltimore, but was overwhelmed for the most part. This week against Oakland is a better matchup if you are looking to him as a QB2/Superflex.

Week 11: at Oakland Raiders

All QB vs OAK

FBG says: Neutral matchup. The Bengals sought to shake up their punchless passing game in Week 10 with rookie Ryan Finley under center, but it didn't pay off. The overwhelmed youngster flopped in his debut, producing just 167 yards on his 30 throws en route to a 36-point loss. He looked thoroughly unprepared to start - his second-quarter pick-six to Marcus Peters was a truly terrible miscue - and made almost no impact with his arm. Finley didn't complete a single deep pass (15+ yards downfield), though to be fair, that wasn't entirely his fault. With both A.J. Green and John Ross sidelined, the Bengals boast little to threaten defenses over the top. As a result, this attack is limited to mostly check-downs and slot routes to Tyler Boyd. Whatever momentum youngsters Auden Tate and Alex Erickson were building with Andy Dalton simply wasn't there last Sunday - they combined for just 36 yards over their 8 targets. It also doesn't help that Finley works behind arguably the league's worst front line. Finley could conceivably take a step forward this week, and the Raiders do make for a forgiving matchup. But Week 10 offered no reason to project anything too positive, even in this situation. The Raiders continue to trot out one of the league's worst pass defenses. They're allowing the league's fifth-most net yards per attempt (7.6), to go along with the third-most touchdowns (24) through 9 games. Perhaps they'll build some momentum from last Thursday, in which they held Philip Rivers to just 207 and harassed him into 3 interceptions. But the odds look stacked against it with two full-timers, free safety Karl Joseph and slot specialist Lamarcus Joyner, sidelined by injury. Joyner has some hope of suiting up, though Joseph looks unlikely to return this season, putting the Raiders in a massive hole for Week 11. They now lack depth in this porous unit, which will push the shaky likes of Nevin Lawson and Curtis Riley into heavy usage They'll join beatable cornerbacks Daryl Worley and Trayvon Mullen, the main culprits in allowing massive days to DeAndre Hopkins (109 yards), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (133 and a touchdown), Allen Robinson (97 and 2), and the Lions' duo of Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones (a combined 258 and 2). The Ryan Finley-led Bengals don't offer much of a scare, but with little pass rush to speak of, there will be even more pressure than usual on the Raiders' weak secondary.

Recent Game Summaries

2019 Week 10 vs BAL (16 / 30 / 167 / 1 / 1 pass, 5 / 22 / 0 rush)

Finley showed potential but the entire Bengals offense was overmatched against a good Ravens defense. Finley threw a bad interception in the second quarter, with Marcus Peters jumping a short out route and taking it for an 89-yard touchdown. Finley showed some mettle by coming right back out and leading a 70-yard touchdown drive on the next possession. He hit Auden Tate for three big gains on the drive and finished it off with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Eifert. The two areas where Finley was arguably an upgrade over Dalton were athleticism and pocket presence. He was able to tuck it and run, picking up 16 yards on an early scramble. He also did a nice job moving within the pocket to buy more time and didn't seem to panic behind a bad offensive line. With the Ravens blitzing up the middle, he slid left and hit Boyd over the middle for a gain of 24.

Bengals | Ryan Finley doesn't do much in first start (Sun Nov 10, 04:24 PM) - Cincinnati Bengals QB Ryan Finley completed 16-of-30 passes for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 10 against the Baltimore Ravens while adding five runs for 22 yards in his first NFL start.

Our View: Finley had a few throws to build on, but he is clearly a rookie and work in progress. He'll get an easier assignment against Oakland next week, but we will keep expectations low.
