Week 12: at Atlanta Falcons
Mark and Joe say: Great matchup. Brian Hoyer threw 50 passes last week in the chase position behind the Texans (Cleveland never led in the game) and wound up finishing Sunday with 20/50 for 330 yards passing, one TD and one interception thrown, with two sacks taken for -13 yards. Andrew Hawkins (13 targets for 6/97/1 receiving) led the team in receiving while Taylor Gabriel also saw 13 targets (for 5/92/0 receiving). The lack of tight end Jordan Cameron (out due to concussion after effects) will be ameliorated this week as Josh Gordon finally returns from his 10-game suspension - just as the Browns' passing attack is heating up. Hoyer and Gordon had good chemistry last year (during Week 3 of 2013 Hoyer threw 19 passes for 10/146/1 receiving to Gordon), so if they are able to rekindle the connection in practices this week we may see some aerial fireworks from this duo.
The Falcons' pass D is ranked 32nd in the NFL averaging 281.2 net passing yards allowed per game, with 14 passing scores given out vs. nine interceptions (tied for 15th in the NFL) and thirteen sacks (tied for 29th) generated to date. Cam Newton was right on the usual pace against Atlanta last week, with 23/37 for 285 net yards, two TDs and two interceptions thrown, with two sacks taken for -7 yards, while Josh McCown posted very similar (strong) passing numbers two weeks ago, with 27/43 for 281 net passing yards, two TDs and two interceptions thrown, with four sacks taken for -20 yards. Atlanta's secondary scares nobody, friends.
