Week 4: at Washington Redskins

All WR vs WAS

Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. Cody Kessler will start in Week Four against Washington, according to head coach Hue Jackson on Monday, September 26. Kessler (21/33 for 244 yards passing, zero TDs or interceptions thrown, and three sacks taken for -17 yards, with two rushes for -1 yard) shared the snaps with Terrelle Pryor (3/5 for 35 yards passing, 4/21/1 rushing, and 14 targets for 8/144/0 receiving) against the Dolphins. The multi-faceted attack brought the Browns to within a last-minute field goal of winning the game (free agent place kicker Cody Parkey missed the game-winner, sending the game into overtime where Miami eventually triumphed). Besides Pryor, Kessler threw at Gary Barnidge (six targets for 5/66/0 receiving), Ricardo Louis (four for 4/30/0) and Andrew Hawkins (four for 2/14/0) the most. It was a solid effort for a rookie quarterback in his first start. The Washington pass defense allowed 25/38 for 337 net yards passing, one TD and two interceptions to Eli Manning and company last weekend. They are currently 26th in the NFL averaging 301.7 net passing yards allowed per game, with four passing TDs surrrendered vs. three interceptions and seven sacks generated to date. Unfortunately, the Washington secondary also lost safety DeAngelo Hall (torn ACL) for the season and saw starting cornerback Bashaud Breeland go down to a high ankle sprain (almost always an injury that causes a multi-week absence) - so not only did they give up over 300 yards passing to the Giants, the secondary got a lot worse personnel-wise during the contest. This looks like a good matchup for the young Cleveland quarterback and his supporting cast. The Washington defense is scrambling this week to reconstitute an already-sub-par secondary.
