Recent Game Summaries

2017 Week 18 vs NO (4 / 3 / 32 / 0 rec)

With the Panthers struggling in the passing game, Kaelin Clay had some bright moments but also had a crucial error to take a touchdown off the board. Cam Newton fired a pass to Clay in the end zone on a quick out, but it clanged off his hands despite pinpoint placement. It could have given the Panthers an early 7-0 lead. Otherwise, Clay did well to haul in a pass along the sideline in the two minute drill towards the end of the game, tapping both feet after securing a Newton bullet pass. He could have redeemed himself with a deep touchdown reception, only to be tackled by a defensive back, drawing a pass interference penalty.

2017 Week 17 vs ATL (2 / 1 / 15 / 0 rec, 1 / -2 / 0 rush)

Kaelin Clay was used primarily as a punt returner and sometimes gadget player on offense. An early attempt at misdirection with an end around didn't fool the Atlanta defense, which flew to the ball all game long. In the passing game, Clay saw a target on a slant, but the pass was too far behind him to corral.

2017 Week 14 vs MIN (1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Kaelin Clay's involvement was mainly as a punt returner, although Cam Newton targeted him once on a deep ball after a couple of Statue of Liberty-esque fakes in the backfield. Minnesota didn't fall for the window dressing, and the coverage was excellent, taking away the downfield option.

2017 Week 12 vs NYJ (3 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec, 1 / 29 / 0 rush)

With Curtis Samuel facing an extended period on the sideline, Kaelin Clay stepped into the breach this week and performed well. Clay, who impressed the Panthers during training camp, dazzled onlookers with a beautifully executed punt return touchdown. Showcasing his open field skills and graceful style, Clay made the first defender miss with a spin move before dashing up the left sideline and showing off his breakaway speed. As a receiver, he was a victim of the passing offense's shortcomings. A deep target down the right was his best opportunity, but the pass was left too short by his quarterback, allowing the defensive back to break it up. Clay showed off his speed again on a well-executed reverse off the left side. Had he been a little more patient and allowed his blocks to develop, he may have scored.
