Summary

Coming off what can only be termed a disappointing 2017, Burkhead was brought back and given another chance to capture the early down role for the Patriots. Last season he saw a fair amount of red zone snaps between weeks 10 and 15 but he barely saw the field when he returned for the playoffs. He may still have been dealing with the aftermath of his knee injury, or he might just have fallen out of favor, which isn't anything new for Patriot backs. There's room for success for him though, if he can stay healthy and perform. Per Sigmund Bloom's AFC East Backfield study from May 18, "the Patriots were sixth in running back carries and fourth in running back rushing yards, even though their leading rusher had only 180 carries." Bloom also pointed out that New England was fifth in running back yards per carry average and had 16 rushing touchdowns. That bodes well for a Burkhead resurgence, as does the fact that the Patriots continue to target backs in the passing game. Burkhead is tracking as an RB4 so far, and that makes sense given his health issues last year and first round rookie Sony Michel. But he has the upside to be a lot more. (June 1)
