News you need to know

From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Oct 27): Bowe is doing well on most of his targets. While they aren't high value targets downfield or in the red zone most of the time, he is still a solid "firewall" bye/injury/emergency wideout.

Week 9: vs New York Jets

Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. As tough as the Jets are against opposing running backs on the ground, their secondary is very vulnerable. They allowed Kyle Orton to look like Jim Kelly last week (10/17 for 213 net yards passing, four TDs and zero interceptions thrown, with four sacks taken for -25 yards), and coughed up 20/37 for 260 yards passing, three TDs and zero interceptions to Tom Brady two games back (with one sack for -1 yard). The Jets are, by far, the most giving pass D in the NFL having recorded an enormous 22 passing TDs given up vs. a tiny one interception recorded this year (dead last in the NFL). Alex Smith has mostly moved the chains over the past two games, with over 85% completions vs. St. Louis (24/28 for 226 yards, zero TDs or interceptions, and two sacks taken for -8 yards last week), and 67.8% completions at San Diego (19/28 for 221 yards, one TD and zero interceptions, with three sacks taken for -10 yards). Fullback Anthony Sherman caught his lone TD throw over the past two weeks (two targets for 2/12/1 receiving at San Diego). Dwayne Bowe (13 targets for 11/148/0) and Travis Kelce (10 for 8/78/0) are the two receivers over 10 targets during the last two games. The giving Jets should allow Smith some TD passes this weekend (they do for everyone else), but it's hard to say which Chiefs besides Jamaal Charles (eight for 6/56/0 receiving over the past two weeks) may be in line for those TDs.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 7 vs SD (7 / 5 / 84 / 0 rec)

Bowe made a couple of great catches and dropped a rather easy target in the red zone. His first catch was a hands catch on a short slant behind him. He then spun the direction of the ball and turned the short gain into a 26 yard big play. Bowe's drop was a deep out that would have set up first and goal, and there was no defender particularly close. He also made a couple of huge 4th quarter catches. One showed great timing with Smith on a back shoulder throw that converted a key third down. The other came on the team's final drive. Bowe kept his route alive with Smith scrambling and hauled in a pass over the middle at a key time.

2014 Week 8 vs STL (6 / 6 / 64 / 0 rec)

The Rams rookie corners gave Bowe a pretty good sized cushion most of the afternoon and he took advantage of it on slants and out routes. Bowe caught all six of his targets and looked like he could get whatever he wanted when he wanted it. Bowe made a great catch on a high pass from Smith for a 14 yard gain over the middle in the second quarter. On the Chiefs long 4th quarter drive Bowe caught a pair of slants for a total of 30 yards. On the second he broke one tackle and carried another for a first down. It was a complete mismatch whenever Bowe was targeted and he got through the day without any drops or silly mistakes.
