Bowe will be suspended by the NFL for the first game of the season against Jacksonville for a substance abuse violation, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Bowe failed to live up to expectations in 2013 for a variety of reasons. The only one of those reasons beyond his control was the performance of the Chiefs defense. Bowe saw a significant reduction in production for the first nine weeks due to the fact that the Chiefs were blowing out bad teams early and had no desire to force the ball into a receiver that doesn't specialize in getting wide open. Bowe's production saw a slight uptick in the second half and he was WR26 from week 11-16. He was even better in the team's playoff loss, putting up an 8-150-1. Historically Bowe has been about a 50/50 bet to hit 1000 yards and other than his anomalous 2010 (15 TD) he's averaged around 5 scores a year. He is good at using his body in traffic, but also has a maddening amount of silly drops. Bowe has struggled with a finger injury in camp and has been suspended for week one of the regular season due to a marijuana arrest in 2013. (August 15)

Chiefs | Frankie Hammond to start (Wed Aug 27, 08:25 AM) - Kansas City Chiefs WR Frankie Hammond Jr. is likely to start in place of suspended WR Dwayne Bowe in Week 1.

Our View: Hammond is a good pickup in deep dynasty to see if he hits in Week 1 to earn a larger role going forward in a very thin Chiefs wide receiver corps. The former Florida receiver has good straight line speed and quickness and could be an upgrade from Donnie Avery if Avery can't get over the dropsies that have plagued his career.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe misses practice (Thu Aug 21, 03:56 PM) - Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe (quadriceps) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 21.

Our View: Bowe's finger has been blamed for a lot of his drop issues this summer so while his quadriceps injury is a concern, we're more worried about his ability to catch the ball. We still see Bowe as a WR4. He has the ability to be so much more, but has never proven that he can put all that talent together.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe suspended (Fri Aug 15, 12:16 PM) - Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe will be suspended for one game for substance abuse, and he'll miss the season opener against the Tennessee Titans, according to a team source.

Our View: This shouldn't affect his value in and of itself, but this news plus the news about his finger being "shot" according to head coach Andy Reid has cast a pall over his draft stock. He should still be considered if he falls to the double digit rounds as a #1 receiver. There is also news that his makes his 2014 8+ million dollar salary no longer guaranteed, so we have to consider the possibility that he doesn't make the roster, even though it would leave the Chiefs in a horrible spot at wide receiver.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe update (Fri Aug 15, 08:44 AM) - Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe's (finger) finger is 'shot', according to head coach Andy Reid. 'It's been thrown out of place about 15 times, and he's not catching the ball,' Reid said. 'But he's getting his work done. You can practice with that type of thing.'

Our View: Bowe was coming on at the end of last year and he will get #1 wide receiver targets by default, but this is not the kind of news you want to hear if you were targeting him in the 8th or 9th round. He could still present value if he battles through the injury - and we all know other wide receivers are playing with fingers that have taken as much abuse as Bowe's - but it's harder to be optimistic about a bounceback now.
