From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Oct 20): Bowe is actually a good receiver when his head and effort are in the game. He made some key catches against the Chargers and seems to have some chemistry generating with Alex Smith. He might be crawling into WR3/Flex territory against the Rams this week.

Week 8: vs St. Louis Rams

Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. Alex Smith and company held the ball for 39 minutes at San Diego last week - long, methodical drives were the name of the game for K.C., so Smith had a modest day passing the football with 19/28 for 221 yards, one TD and zero interceptions (three sacks taken for -10 yards). The Chiefs attempted 39 rushes for 154 yards and one TD last week in comparison to the 28 passing attempts. Fullback Anthony Sherman (2/12/1) handled the TD for Smith while Dwayne Bowe (seven targets for 5/84/0 receiving) led the team in receiving. A.J. Jenkins (two for 2/37/0) and Travis Kelce (four for 4/33/0) helped Smith keep the chains moving. The Rams' pass D allowed 23/36 for 292 net yards, two TDs and zero interceptions to Russell Wilson last week, after giving up 22/35 for 343 yards, three TDs and zero interceptions to Colin Kaepernick two weeks ago. This secondary is very weak, friends. They are playing way worse than their season average of 234 net passing yards allowed per game would indicate. Advantage, Smith and the Chiefs. That said, the rushing matchup is favorable for Jamaal Charles and company, so it's likely that Smith won't have to throw the ball a whole lot in this game.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 5 vs SF (6 / 3 / 42 / 0 rec)

Bowe continued to show the inconsistency that has plagued his career of late. Bowe was targeted 6 times which was second most on the team, but only converted 3 of them into receptions. Bowe flashed talent on a couple of plays, particularly an 18 yard reception in the second quarter which took the Chiefs into 49ers territory. On other plays Bowe ran lazy routes which allowed San Francisco defensive backs, and on one occasion Patrick Willis, the ability to break up the pass or make it impossible for Smith to deliver Bowe a good ball. Bowe only received one target in the entirety of the first half, and Smith did not look his was during the potential game winning drive.

2014 Week 7 vs SD (7 / 5 / 84 / 0 rec)

Bowe made a couple of great catches and dropped a rather easy target in the red zone. His first catch was a hands catch on a short slant behind him. He then spun the direction of the ball and turned the short gain into a 26 yard big play. Bowe's drop was a deep out that would have set up first and goal, and there was no defender particularly close. He also made a couple of huge 4th quarter catches. One showed great timing with Smith on a back shoulder throw that converted a key third down. The other came on the team's final drive. Bowe kept his route alive with Smith scrambling and hauled in a pass over the middle at a key time.
