Week 7: at San Diego Chargers

Mark and Joe say: Neutral matchup. This is a huge AFC West rivalry so look for an intense game on both sides of the football in this clash. After wiping out the Patriots with 20/26 for 248 yards passing, three TDs and zero interceptions thrown back in Week 4, Alex Smith cooled off at his old team's new house in Santa Clara, throwing 16/30 for 158 yards passing, one TD and one interception two weeks ago. Junior Hemingway (four targets for 4/50/0 receiving) led the Chiefs in receiving during that game, while Dwayne Bowe (six for 3/42/0), Anthony Fasano (seven for 3/42/0) and Travis Kelce (three for 2/15/1) also helped move the chains during the 17-22 loss. We'll see if a week of rest and recuperation has re-energized the Chiefs in this key game. The Chargers are ranked fourth in the NFL in terms of average net passing yards allowed per game (209.3) but have given up 10 passing scores vs just four interceptions (16th in the NFL) and 12 sacks (17th) generated to date. Derek Carr almost pulled off an upset last week and bombed this unit for 18/34 yielding 282 net yards, four TDs and one interception thrown (with zero sacks taken), while the Jets embarrassed themselves at San Diego two games ago (60 net yards passing, one interception and two sacks taken for -14 yards). The Chargers have run hot and cold in this phase of the game lately, and so has Alex Smith. That sounds about even to us.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 4 vs NE (6 / 5 / 81 / 0 rec)

Despite being covered by Revis for much of the day Bowe was involved early in this game and had his best game of the young 2014 season. Bowe beat Revis on an inside slant for a 15 yard gain to set up the first touchdown. He may have scored on the play, but the ball was thrown slightly behind him and he had to reach back in front of Revis and snatch the ball away. Bowe also made a really nice hands-catch on a deep hitch thrown wide by Smith for a 9 yard gain. Bowe's biggest gain came on a corner route, where he beat his man over the top and caught a perfectly thrown ball from Alex Smith for a 33 yard gain. Later in that drive he caught an 8 yard pass just a yard shy of the goal line for a near score. Bowe only saw one target in the second half due to the game script.

2014 Week 5 vs SF (6 / 3 / 42 / 0 rec)

Bowe continued to show the inconsistency that has plagued his career of late. Bowe was targeted 6 times which was second most on the team, but only converted 3 of them into receptions. Bowe flashed talent on a couple of plays, particularly an 18 yard reception in the second quarter which took the Chiefs into 49ers territory. On other plays Bowe ran lazy routes which allowed San Francisco defensive backs, and on one occasion Patrick Willis, the ability to break up the pass or make it impossible for Smith to deliver Bowe a good ball. Bowe only received one target in the entirety of the first half, and Smith did not look his was during the potential game winning drive.
