Recent Game Summaries

2016 Week 17 vs MIN (10 / 14 / 125 / 0 / 2 pass, 0 / 0 / 0 rush)

Barkley was not a big part of the game plan as this one got away from the Bears early. He threw an end zone interception intended for Alshon jeffery when he didn't see Xavier Rhodes dropping back to bracket Jeffery on the first drive. Barkley was able to move the offense after multiple stalled out first half drives and capped the only touchdown drive of the game with a catch (not pass) for a score from Cameron Meredith. Things didn't go better in the second half, as Barkley threw a bad interception to a well-covered Cameron Meredith and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown before he was replaced by David Fales.

2016 Week 16 vs WAS (24 / 40 / 323 / 2 / 5 pass, 0 / 0 / 0 rush)

Sunday's 41-21 loss to the Washington Redskins is the low point of Matt Barkley's short career as a member of the Chicago Bears. Barkley threw five interceptions in the loss to go along with 323 yards passing and two touchdowns. He's now thrown eight interceptions in the past two games, many of which are inexplicable. Triple coverage didn't stop Barkley from targeting Deonte Thompson on a seam route into the end zone, a ball that was intercepted with ease. Throwing off the back foot is not recommended, but that didn't stop Barkley from mis-throwing a few due to a bad footwork. For all the bad, there were some nice throws, like the 21-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Meredith. The only thing stopping Barkley from being a half-decent quarterback is himself and his inability to not turn over the ball. But hey, he's putting up some decent numbers if you ignore the picks. He's registered eight touchdowns and has gone over 300-yards passing in three of his five starts.

2016 Week 15 vs GB (30 / 43 / 362 / 2 / 3 pass, 0 / 0 / 0 rush)

Matt Barkley continued to play like a competent NFL quarterback in Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Barkley completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for 362 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions (one INT came on a Hail Mary at the end of the first half). Until the fourth quarter, guys like Deonte Thompson and Cameron Meredith received the lion's share of the targets, with Alshon Jeffery nowhere to be found. The Bears entered the fourth down 17 points, but Barkley quickly passed the Bears back into the game by finding Jeffery over and over again. Jeffery went on to catch all seven of his passes in the fourth quarter. The Barkley-to-Jeffery combination really unlocked some things in the offense, allowing guys like Deonte Thompson and Cameron Meredith to play in more space. Barkley routinely found Thompson and Meredith open in the middle of the field. That's the area of the field in which Barkley excels. It's when he throws deep does he seem to struggle.

2016 Week 14 vs DET (20 / 32 / 212 / 1 / 0 pass, 0 / 0 / 0 rush)

The Matt Barkley experience in Chicago hasn't all been bad so far. In his first road start of the season, Barkley nearly led the Bears to an upset win over the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions. Barkley completed 20-of-32 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown in the 20-17 loss. Despite falling short on the game's final drive, Barkley did a great job of spreading around the ball without committing any turnovers. On a team that's decimated at the pass-catching position, Barkley found six different targets in the passing game. Of the six targets, you likely only had heard of one or two of them entering the season. So, props to the former USC quarterback. As long as OC Dowell Loggains continues continues to run an up-tempo offense with Barkley under center, there's no reason to think this Bears passing offense can't be somewhat legitimate from here on out.

2016 Week 12 vs TEN (28 / 54 / 316 / 3 / 2 pass, 2 / 0 / 0 rush)

Barkley had one ill-advised end zone interception and another ball that Wesley Woodyard took from the intended receiver. He also only completed a little over half of his 54 attempts. Still, he was victimized by eight drops, including three in the end zone. He made the throws to complete the comeback from down 27-7, but his receivers let him down. When considering that the Bears are missing their top two wideouts and tight end, Barkley's performance is more impressive. He probably enhanced his career prospects as a backup in the NFL with this game.
