Week 6: at Atlanta Falcons

All RB vs ATL

FBG says: Great matchup. With a ground game thoroughly stuck in the mud, the Buccaneers are likely looking at a backfield shift. No team has run for less yardage since Week 1, and none have averaged less per carry (just 2.91), either. But the blame can't be placed on the front line, which has improved somewhat. Rather, it's been lead back Peyton Barber who's looked anemic, and rookie Ronald Jones could be sliding into the lead role. Barber isn't built like a power back, but with little foot-speed or wiggle, his only real play is to plow into the line. As a result, he hasn't topped 33 yards since Week 1, with just 5 of those 31 runs topping 4 yards. Jones hasn't fared better in his (very) limited action (29 yards on 10 rushes), but he at least brings attributes to the table that Barber sorely lacks, like athleticism and breakaway ability. If the Buccaneers want to keep their explosive passing game open and humming, they'll eventually need some sort of dynamism in the backfield, and Jones is their best bet for it. Just demolished by injury after injury since Week 1, the Falcons run defense is nearing rock-bottom. The Falcons remained gritty when they lost rising stars Deion Jones and Keanu Neal for the season, but they're now operating without their most important run-stuffing component, nose tackle Grady Jarrett. Jarrett is in the midst of a Pro Bowl season, but sat last week with an ankle injury and looks dicey for this Sunday. Without him, the Falcons were rolled over by James Conner last week for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns. Simply put, if there's a run unit custom-designed for the Buccaneers to snap their ground slump, it's this torn-apart group. Reserve linebacker Duke Riley continues to struggle in Jones' place, and the team is deeply feeling the loss of both starting safeties. If Jarrett can't go, expect more wide lanes inside and shoddy pursuit on the second level.

Recent Game Summaries

2018 Week 4 vs CHI (7 / 24 / 0 rush, 2 / 1 / 6 / 0 rec)

Barber got the start but was out-touched 11-8 by Ronald Jones after the rookie was activated for the first time this season. Barber did out-snap Jones, but managed just 24 yards on his 7 carries. He caught a short checkdown pass from Winston late in the 3rd quarter for a short gain. It looks like Jones may get the start next week.

2018 Week 3 vs PIT (8 / 33 / 0 rush, 2 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Barber had some success up the middle in the 1st quarter. He nearly scored on an 18 yard run, but was tripped up by a defender inside the Steelers 5 yard line. The Bucs faked a play action to Barber on the next play and scored with a pass to Brate. Barber got another goal line carry from the 5 at the end of the 2nd quarter, but he couldn't punch it in. The Bucs quickly fell behind and Barber was essentially phased out by the game plan, as he logged a few more carries to keep the defense honest on the play-action deep balls that Fitzpatrick was lobbing downfield for Evans and Godwin. Barber got once more goal line carry from the 4 yard line in the 2nd half, but couldn't punch it in. He was targeted twice on checkdown passes, but could not secure either target.

2018 Week 2 vs PHI (16 / 22 / 0 rush, 2 / 1 / 7 / 0 rec)

The Tampa Bay running game didn't contribute much other than keeping the Philadelphia defense honest on play action passes. Barber, who averaged less than 2 yards a carry, is the clear lead in the backfield, but there just isn't much room to run right now. Barber picked up a couple of targets in the passing game, securing an out route to pick up a first down in the first half.

2018 Week 1 vs NO (19 / 69 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Barber had a solid but unspectacular game as Ryan Fitzpatrick and the receiving core lit it up. Barber drew the start, breaking his longest run off left tackle for a 23 yard gain in the first quarter. The Bucs kept running just enough to make the play action effective. Barber had a goal line touchdown vultured by Fitzpatrick in the 1st, as the QB faked a handoff and a rolled out on a bootleg, punching the ball in himself. Barber got a couple more carries inside the five yard line later in the third quarter, but was unable to find the end zone. The Bucs used Barber to grind clock in the 4th quarter as they held off Drew Brees and the Saints offense. Barber wasn't target in the passing game, but backup Jacquizz Rodgers only logged 3 touches to Barber's 19.
