Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 2 vs DET (7 / 5 / 54 / 1 rec)

Quarterback Cam Newton said it was a goal of his to feed the football to new targets Jason Avant and Jerricho Cotchery this week, and he didn't let his veteran receivers down. The crafty veteran Avant was targeted deep early on as Newton got into rhythm, but the receiver was not even close to being open. Avant rattled off a 10-yard gain on a backside screen pass, a staple of the Carolina offense often run for Greg Olsen. The former Eagle"s most telling contribution came in the red zone. Split out wide left, Avant"s quick break to the inside on the dig route gave Newton a nice target, and his quarterback duly fired it in between his numbers for the touchdown, Avant falling backwards into the end zone. Late in the contest, Newton went back to Avant on a key third down to help the Panthers ice the game away. Although the chemistry isn"t quite there yet, there is potential for the on-field rapport between Newton and Avant to build in coming weeks.

2014 Week 3 vs PIT (6 / 2 / 12 / 0 rec)

A non-factor in this contest, Jason Avant was not targeted nearly as much as last week against Detroit and was mostly a passenger, only called upon when the Panthers went to four- or five-wide sets. With Benjamin, Olsen and even Cotchery as viable targets, Avant's role seems to be a small piece of the offensive pie in Carolina.

2014 Week 4 vs BAL (3 / 2 / 24 / 0 rec)

Like veteran Jerricho Cotchery, Jason Avant was the victim of a poor offensive display by Carolina as they were unable to get any kind of rhythm. Penalties interrupted drives, while pressure on Newton put paid to any form of consistent passing attack in comeback mode. Avant was unable to exert his influence on the contest apart from a nice catch in traffic on third down to keep the chains moving. Avant's role may increase in coming weeks if the Panthers rushing attack continues to tread water on the injury front.

Panthers | Friday injury report (Fri Sep 19, 02:42 PM) - Carolina Panthers RB Fozzy Whittaker (thigh) is listed as doubtful for Week 3. WR Jason Avant (thigh) and WR Jerricho Cotchery (thigh) are listed as questionable, while OT Byron Bell (toe), WR Philly Brown (ankle), OT Nate Chandler (toe), DT Colin Cole (non-injury), LB Thomas Davis (hip), DT Dwan Edwards (back), FB Mike Tolbert (chest) and OT Garry Williams (hip) are listed as probable. Cole, Cotchery and Whittaker did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 19. Avant was limited during practice, while the other players fully participated in practice.

Our View: Cotchery is facing his old mates Sunday night, but he might not get to notch any points on the Steelers. Jason Avant would be a good desperation play in his stead, but he too is banged up. Look for Greg Olsen and Kelvin Benjamin to dominate targets in this one.
