Week 7: at Green Bay Packers

Mark and Joe say: Tough matchup. Cam Newton was allowed to run the ball last week, and responded with a magnificent 17/107/1 - it was like an oasis in the deep desert for long-suffering Newton owners who kept wondering when he'd be allowed to play at the top of his abilities. Added to his 29/46 for 284 yards passing, two TDs and one interception throwing the football, Newton accounted for 391 yards of offense last week, with three TDs to his credit. Not too shabby, friends. Greg Olsen (11 targets for 6/62/1 receiving), Jerricho Cotchery (10 for 4/58/0), Kelvin Benjamin (eight for 7/49/1) and Jason Avant (seven for 5/47/0) led the Panthers in receiving during Week 6 - this offense is coming to life during October. The Packers' pass D is among the top five units in the NFL as of Week 7, averaging 213.5 net passing yards allowed per game, with seven passing scores given up vs. nine interceptions (second in the NFL) and 13 sacks (tied with Carolina for 15th in the NFL) generated to date. Ryan Tannehill and company posted 20/31 for 237 net yards, two TDs and two interceptions thrown last week (one sack for -7 yards taken). Two weeks ago, Christian Ponder was sacked six times for -34 yards, with zero TDs thrown and two interceptions given to the Packers (22/44 for 188 net yards passing). Newton and company have a tough matchup ahead of them in Lamabeau Field on Sunday.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 4 vs BAL (3 / 2 / 24 / 0 rec)

Like veteran Jerricho Cotchery, Jason Avant was the victim of a poor offensive display by Carolina as they were unable to get any kind of rhythm. Penalties interrupted drives, while pressure on Newton put paid to any form of consistent passing attack in comeback mode. Avant was unable to exert his influence on the contest apart from a nice catch in traffic on third down to keep the chains moving. Avant's role may increase in coming weeks if the Panthers rushing attack continues to tread water on the injury front.

2014 Week 5 vs CHI (4 / 2 / 42 / 0 rec)

A chain mover in this offense with limited upside, Jason Avant nonetheless offers Newton a reliable target, especially in obvious passing situations. Avant did an excellent job getting separation on his biggest reception of the contest, a 22-yard strike down the right hash. Newton delivered a perfect pass, but the crafty veteran was right where he needed to be. He will continue to operate primarily in three-wide sets but is very much the fourth option in this offense.

2014 Week 6 vs CIN (7 / 5 / 47 / 0 rec)

Still being utilised for the most part as a complementary target to Benjamin, Olsen and Cotchery, Jason Avant nonetheless made his presence felt in this game. In the screen game especially, Avant was effective in weaving through traffic and following his blocks for positive gains. Avant bailed his quarterback out early on with a great adjustment on a low pass to keep a drive alive. With the game script as it was, Avant saw more snaps and played a bigger role, but this is not the norm for the veteran.
