Week 8: vs Seattle Seahawks

Mark and Joe say: Neutral matchup. Carolina's offense went from finding a rhythm vs. Cincinnati (during a 37-37 OT tie game) to getting blown out (10-38 scored by the first team offense before the second-string tacked on a late TD to make it 17-38 in the crushing loss to Green Bay last week). Cam Newton (17/31 for 205 yards passing, one TD and one interception thrown, with three sacks taken for -25, with 7/41/0 rushing to his credit) had an O.K. outing, but O.K. doesn't do it against the Packers in Green Bay. As usual, Greg Olsen (eight targets for 8/105/0 receiving) and Kelvin Benjamin (six for 3/61/1 receiving) saw most of the action for the Panthers' receiving corps. The Seahawks' D is also in a funk after having dropped two straight games, allowing 21/32 for 239 yards, two TDs and zero interceptions to Tony Romo (with one sack for -11 yards) and then 19/22 for 170 yards passing, two TDs and zero interceptions to the Rams last week (86.3 completion % for those keeping score at home). Seattle is not able to assert their usual defensive dominance over the middle weeks of October. On balance this looks like a neutral matchup for the home-team Panthers.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 5 vs CHI (4 / 2 / 42 / 0 rec)

A chain mover in this offense with limited upside, Jason Avant nonetheless offers Newton a reliable target, especially in obvious passing situations. Avant did an excellent job getting separation on his biggest reception of the contest, a 22-yard strike down the right hash. Newton delivered a perfect pass, but the crafty veteran was right where he needed to be. He will continue to operate primarily in three-wide sets but is very much the fourth option in this offense.

2014 Week 6 vs CIN (7 / 5 / 47 / 0 rec)

Still being utilised for the most part as a complementary target to Benjamin, Olsen and Cotchery, Jason Avant nonetheless made his presence felt in this game. In the screen game especially, Avant was effective in weaving through traffic and following his blocks for positive gains. Avant bailed his quarterback out early on with a great adjustment on a low pass to keep a drive alive. With the game script as it was, Avant saw more snaps and played a bigger role, but this is not the norm for the veteran.

2014 Week 7 vs GB (5 / 2 / 6 / 0 rec)

A quiet day for veteran Jason Avant, whose role in the offense remains a minimal one. Cam Newton missed him early on a couple of bubble screens and simple throws to the outside, but Avant was unable to consistently get open and present his quarterback a good target. The game script played a large part in this, as Newton and the offense failed to establish any kind of rhythm. Avant remains a role player at best in an offense that is consistently inconsistent.
