Week 3: vs Cincinnati Bengals

All RB vs CIN

FBG says: Neutral matchup. This Carolina running game is different than we've seen it in recent years. This has become a splash-play attack, one that seeks to open holes and let its runners (including Cam Newton) create plays by running to daylight. That's a hit-or-miss strategy, especially behind a front line that's missing three starters. It's working in spurts, though. Christian McCaffrey continues to excel as a runner - he's averaged 4.58 yards per carry over his last 11 games - but remains underused on the ground. And C.J. Anderson has looked rejuvenated himself, running for 66 yards on 10 attempts to open the year, but isn't a big part of the offense. The Panthers are using McCaffrey's receiving skills as an extension of their run game, but not using their runners to grind or slow down games. As a result, it's hard to project their success in a vacuum. It looks like game flow and defensive priorities will determine how well and how productively they run. The Cincinnati run defense has yet to be tested much here in 2017. They've faced only an anemic Colts unit and a Ravens attack that had to abandon its ground game early. Still, there's been noticeable improvement from last year's below-average group. Nose tackle Andrew Billings is blossoming into a run-stuffing star, and right next to him, the great Geno Atkins is fresh off a dominant performance against All-Pro Ravens guard Marshal Yanda. The team lacks pursuit talent on the second level and could really use Vontaze Burfict back. But on the whole, this is no longer a pushover unit.
