Week 15: at Oakland Raiders

All RB vs OAK

FBG says: Neutral matchup. Leonard Fournette struggled for the second straight week as he led an uninspiring Jaguars rushing offense with just 50 rushing yards from 15 carries. After starting the season averaging 20.4 carries per game with four games of 20 or more rushing attempts, Fournette has dipped to just 14.4 carries per game since Week 9 with over 15 carries in only one game. Efficiency has also been an issue for Fournette in recent weeks, as he has averaged over 3.6 yards per carry in just one of his last five games while exceeding 50 rushing yards just once. His offensive line has not played as well in recent weeks due to excessive penalties and an ankle injury plaguing center Brandon Linder. Fournette remains heavily involved in the passing game, but this recent lack of usage on the ground certainly sheds doubt on the fantasy prospects of Jacksonville's bell-cow back. On another note, the re-introduction of Gardner Minshew as starting quarterback now adds back in that extra dimension of upside on the ground. Minshew's risk-taking playing style and athletic ability led to him rushing for 28 or more yards in half of his starts earlier this season, and he put up 31 rushing yards in last week's game. The Raiders faltered against Derrick Henry and the Titans last week, giving up over 103 yards and two touchdowns to Henry, who had the best fantasy day (non-PPR) any running back has had this season against the Raiders. Oakland also allowed a pair of rushing touchdowns to the Chiefs in Week 13, but they had done a decent job at limiting yardage from running backs in many of their preceding games. Limiting big plays has been a calling card of this rushing defense, as they are one of only a few teams in the league to have not yet allowed a run play of more than 40 yards. They are also giving up just 4.1 rushing yards per attempt, which is slightly better than league-average. Strong run-stoppers on the interior and decent play from their safeties have helped this team excel in spots against the run. Linebacker Tahir Whitehead, while questionable in pass coverage, has played relatively well against the run also. While not a slam dunk matchup by any means for Leonard Fournette, the Raiders do still offer some level of opportunity for him to get back on track.

Recent Game Summaries

2019 Week 11 vs IND (1 / 6 / 0 rush, 2 / 2 / 13 / 0 rec)

Ryquell Armstead had one early carry for six yards but did not receive another carry for the rest of the game. He caught each of his two targets for a total of 13 yards and was used by Jacksonville more as a pass blocker on third downs than he has in past games, so that is really the lone noticeable development for the rookie running back.

2019 Week 9 vs HOU (0 / 0 / 0 rush, 5 / 5 / 65 / 0 rec)

He didn't get much work in the run game. He did however get some usage as a pass catcher. He converted the first first down of the game for the Jaguars, catching a dumpoff from Minshew, leaking out after pass protecting. It was the biggest play for the Jaguar offense for most of the game, until Keelan Cole's deep 30-yarder down the right sideline in garbage time.

2019 Week 8 vs NYJ (6 / 7 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Rookie running back Ryquell Armstead played the most snaps he has played all season but he had the same tough sledding that Leonard Fournette had, carrying it six times for only seven yards. Like Fournette, Armstead simply had zero running room. He did get a few red-zone carries and was the primary running back every time Fournette was not on the field, so the hope is he can still poach a touchdown here and there.

2019 Week 7 vs CIN (3 / 3 / 0 rush, 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Rookie running back Ryquell Armstead only played seven snaps on Sunday in relief of Fournette. He had three carries for three yards, though one of his carries went for six yards. Inconsistent blocking and no real pattern of usage hindered him this game.

2019 Week 6 vs NO (1 / 1 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Armstead had only one touch in Sunday's game, a one-yard goal line run. Outside of the team's Week 4 victory over the Denver Broncos, Armstead has simply not been given nearly any opportunities at all.

2019 Week 5 vs CAR (1 / -1 / 0 rush, 1 / 1 / 7 / 0 rec)

Despite playing a large role in Week 4's game against Denver, Armstead only touched the ball twice against Carolina. One was a negative yards carry that was blown up by Carolina's front seven, while the other was a checkdown pass on a short curl route. He is a talented player but his usage remains inconsistent from game to game.

2019 Week 4 vs DEN (8 / 42 / 0 rush, 1 / 1 / 7 / 1 rec)

After three games and one carry, the Jaguars started easing Armstead into the offense against Denver and he performed very well for them. He first checked into the game on the second drive in the first quarter. He scored his first touchdown of the season on a redzone catch, where he converted a flat pass upfield while Garnder Minshew evaded the rush. He showed good power and acceleration on his carries when subbing for Fournette in the second half as well. They compliment each other well, as Armstead is basically a slightly lighter, more agile version of Fournette.
