Week 7: vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

All RB vs TB

FBG says: Neutral matchup. LeSean McCoy has struggled virtually all year for ground-game consistency. New coach Rick Dennison, from the Gary Kubiak tree, has installed his own one-back, zone-based running scheme, and McCoy and his line are still sharpening their nails in it. On the young season they're sitting 29th in yards per attempt, and McCoy hasn't topped 3.80 himself (or 76 yards) since Week 1. It's true that they've faced a handful of strong run defenses over that span, but it's still concerning that McCoy has yet to create anything close to fireworks since Opening Day. From Weeks 2 through 5 he broke just 2 runs of 10+ yards and was stuffed for 2 or less on 41% of his attempts when adjusted for short-yardage plays. Simply put: in terms of the running game, McCoy is nothing more than a plodder at the moment, and his fantasy value is hinging upon his receiving contributions. It's hard to project a major slump-buster anytime soon; we need to see a game or two in which his blocking comes together and he's able to follow it consistently to the second and third levels. A date with the Buccaneers, who were gashed by Adrian Peterson last week, may be just what the doctor ordered, but we'll need visual assurance. As always, Tyrod Taylor's legs are an x-factor for this matchup. He's averaging career lows in yardage per attempt and per game, but is a weekly threat to erupt on the ground; the Buccaneers missing their star middle linebacker could make for an intriguing mismatch. Since their second game, Tampa Bay's has been a generally below-average unit against the run. They've been worked over twice in the last 4 weeks, giving up 97 yards to Dalvin Cook and 134 to Adrian Peterson. They'd certainly welcome the return of middle linebacker Kwon Alexander, who's tentatively expected to give it a go this Sunday. Tackles Gerald McCoy and Clinton McDonald can only do so much with backup talents expected to make the plays from behind them. If Alexander returns for Week 7, this outlook will be markedly rosier.
