Best Case
Madieu Williams has been a solid fantasy DB for several years and for most of his career, he has put up strong tackle numbers. His big play numbers are average at best, but Williams has still managed to be a consistent DB2 or better throughout his career. Williams figures to see more chances to make big plays in this defense and if he can maintain respectable tackle numbers, it is possible that he could slide into the upper DB2 range in 2008, with a slight chance at climbing into the top ten.
Worst Case
Williams joins the Vikings this year after playing his entire career with the Bengals. He usually put up good fantasy numbers with the Bengals, but it is questionable if he will have the same opportunities with the Vikings. With Pat and Kevin Williams in the middle of the defensive line, E.J. Henderson behind them, and two solid tackling CBs, it could be difficult for Williams to approach the tackle numbers that he is accustomed to and thus, it is possible that Williams falls outside of the LB3 tier.
Outlook
Williams was usually a player who could be counted on for 70 solo tackles with the Bengals, assuming he could play a full 16 games schedule. Their defense was not the greatest, so moving to the Vikings and their stout run defense could cause his tackle numbers to drop off due to fewer opportunities. Williams has never put up huge big play numbers, but it is possible that he seems more chances in coverage this year and that could result in him making more plays in pass defense. Considering the quality of the Vikings defense, Williams will have a tough time cracking the top 20 DBs this year.
