Game Summaries
Week 5 at NYG - Charlie Whitehurst replaced an injured Jackson roughly halfway through the game and they just about split production as a result. Like Jackson, Whitehurst was also seen getting hit in the pocket and scrambling away from pressure but able to find wide open receivers when he could look downfield. The Seahawks don't have many true weapons but unknown players were having big days against a Giants secondary that can't cover well at all. Whitehurst lead a very important touchdown drive for the Seahawks late that resulted in a truly bizarre touchdown. Whitehurst caught a NYG DE offside and found a wide open WR Baldwin deep downfield as the NYG defense foolishly stopped playing after the flag had been thrown. The SEA defense did the rest and scored on a pick 6 which took some pressure off Whitehurst to score again. Whitehurst looked good on Sunday but it is unlikely to last unless this was the moment of emerging big time talent such in Seattle as WR Baldwin.Week 7 at CLE - Whitehurst struggled all day with his accuracy, and made a number of poor decisions en route to a terrible day for the Seahawks interim starting QB. The Seahawks came out of the gate running a hurry up offense; however, two false start penalties and a sack on the opening drive made a pretty good case for huddling up. Whitehurst made a number of inaccurate throws. In most cases, they were not bad enough to hurt the team, but he was unable to sustain any drives as a result. Early on, he went long to Obomanu, who had a clear step on his man, but underthrew and was nearly intercepted. Another drive-killer: Whitehurst on a rollout play, chose to throw to the triple covered deep man instead of the underneath target who was clearly a step ahead of his coverage. Unable to properly get the ball in the hands of his wideouts, he became over-reliant on his tight ends, but the irony is that Zach Miller, who is actually a receiving threat, was out this week. In the second half, Whitehurst wisely made more of an effort to get the ball in Sidney Rice's hands, but the two couldn't quite connect. His interception was the result of a long sideline toss to Rice, that he could have gotten if it had been thrown to the inside shoulder. In Whitehurst's defense, the running game was no help at all, and Marshawn Lynch was a surprise scratch at the beginning of the game, which meant the Browns were able to focus on shutting down the passing game right from the start.
Week 8 vs CIN - The plan was for Whitehurst to come in so that the Seahawks could rest Tarvaris Jackson a bit longer and allow his pectoral muscle to heal. That didn't work out as Whitehurst looked flustered and confused through a quarter and a half. The offense could not get going and the Bengals defensive front was harassing Whitehurst on almost every snap.
