2007 Game Summaries
Week 1 - Washington started the game and provided some zip to the outside running and passing games. The Jets came on to the field in a spread offensive formation, which featured Washington in the package. He was called upon on the second play of the game, rushing three yards, as well as well as the very next play, where he caught an eleven-yard screen pass. The Jets coaching staff did a good job giving Washington ample time in the backfield, where he amassed 30 yards on three catches, and added another 15 yards rushing on four carries.
Week 2 - Washington primarily participated on special teams after Justin Miller left the game, but also had one fourth quarter target on the Jets' final drive of the game.
Week 3 - Washington opened at running back for the Jets and had the first three carries. From then on, he only spelled Jones occasionally. His main job was to replace all pro return specialist Justin Miller, and responded with a 98 yard touchdown return after Ronnie Brown had tied the score in the second quarter.
Week 4 - Washington was featured prominently when the Jets ran their no huddle and two minute offenses. His four rushing attempts included runs of nine and eight yards. The latter was a quick touchdown burst up the middle of the Bills' defense. The touchdown was the fifth of Washington's career.
Washington was targeted nine times and caught eight short passes. He also returned two kickoffs for a 27 yard average.
Week 5 - Washington was not as much of a factor in the game logging only nine rushes for 13 yards and adding one catch for a one yard loss.
Week 6 - Washington caught his only target for a five yard gain. He added two rushes for eight yards.
Week 7 - Washington saw more playing time late in the game, but started as the backup running back. He replaced Thomas Jones for the majority of the fourth quarter, possibly because the Jets needed an additional passing option.
Week 8 - Washington spelled Jones on occasion and gained 25 yards on five carries. Being used in third down and passing situations as well, Washington was able to bring in two of his three targets for seven total yards. He was responsible for one turnover in the second quarter, as he coughed the ball.
Week 9 - Washington gave the Jets an early spark by returning the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. He had a few carries and saw a few dump offs in the passing game.
Week 11 - Washington played sparingly in the offense, carrying twice for ten yards, but he caused real damage returning kicks. Pittsburgh had been able harness Washington through most of the game with pooch kicks and squibs. In overtime he fielded a low wobbly punt before it hit the ground and raced 33 yards to Steelers' 28 to set up the winning field goal.
Week 12 - Washington lost a fumble on the first kickoff he returned, and had a minimal impact as a running back.
Week 13 - Washington had a great game as he gained 110 total yards and added two touchdowns. He was used interchangeably with Thomas Jones and gained just about as many yards as Jones in half the carries. Washington also saw three targets, grabbing two of them for 35 total yards. His first touchdown was a beautifully designed play where Washington took a direct snap in for the score.
Week 14 - Washington did not play a significant role in this game, receiving only three rushes, and not seeing time in goal line packages with the exception of third down. Washington fumbled the opening kickoff, and though the Jets recovered the coaches may have opted to keep the ball in Jones' hands on a rainy afternoon.
Week 15 - Leon Washington rushed four times for 59 yards, including an impressive 49 yard burst that he broke off on the Jets second drive of the game. He was also able to catch three of his four targets for nine yards.
Week 16 - The recently named MVP of the Jets had a slow day as he accounted for only seven total yards by air and land. He carried the ball once for five yards and added two yards receiving, catching both of his targets from Pennington.
Week 17 - Washington had another solid relief effort and showed his versatility as he recorded 116 total yards of offense rushing, receiving, and passing. In his relief of Thomas Jones, Washington carried the ball 11 times for 67 yards and caught three of his five targets for 13 total yards. It was on a third down play to start the second quarter, where Washington lined up as the quarterback and was able to hit rookie wide out Wallace Wright for a 36 yard pass play.
