Best Case

The Texans passing attack puts up close to 4,000 passing yards once again this season, the rushing attack improves keeping defenses honest and Walter sees a lot of single coverage against CB2 talent. If all of this were to occur, Walter can approach receiving numbers similar to a season ago (65 receptions for 800 yards).

Worst Case

The Texans run the ball more in 2008, shrinking the passing yards downwards by 15 percent, the defense continues to improve, top receiver Andre Johnson stays healthy throughout the season, Owen Daniels becomes the dependable second target for the offense and Walter gets pushed for playing time by other Texans receivers. He could see him production cut in half if this occurs.

Outlook

There isn't a reason to believe that Walter is capable of eclipsing his numbers from a season ago, so those should be considered his ceiling. If Johnson stays healthy and the Texans defense can improve over the 2007 performance, Walter may find it challenging to approach his statistics from last season. He may have marginal fantasy value as a WR5, but it would be folly to expect him to start week to week in fantasy football.

2007 Game Summaries

Week 1 - Walter provided another receiving option for Schaub. He was targeted twice and pulled in one pass for ten yards.

Week 2 - Walter had one catch for seven yards. He was the only Houston wide receiver to have a catch besides Andre Johnson. His biggest play of the game came on a Carolina kickoff return. There was a fumble on the play and after a scramble for the ball Walter dove into the end zone to secure it for the touchdown.

Week 3 - Walter did not see many balls thrown his way, but was the intended target on Matt Schaub's second interception of the game. Walter did have one 18 yard reception in the third quarter called back due to offensive holding.

Week 4 - Walter was used mostly on short routes, but did manage to get open deep once and make the catch. He did a good job of getting open short and gaining additional yards after making the reception.

Week 5 - Walter was Schaub's favorite receiver, getting ten targets in the game and coming down with five receptions for 67 yards. He also had nine yards rushing on an end around.

Week 6 - Walter was by far the most active Houston receiver, although 12 of his 15 targets came in the second half of this game. He also ran a reverse that lost five yards. Walter and Andre Davis seem to be vying to be the number two receiver in the Texans' passing offense when Andre Johnson returns from his knee injury.

Week 7 - After having a big game in week six, Walter was all but invisible in the first three quarters of the game. But he would have a huge fourth quarter. He finally caught his first pass early in the fourth quarter for 11 yards. His second catch was a deep 40 yard reception up the middle of the field on the next drive. He would add two more catches of 23 and eight yards later in the drive. He would catch a six yard touchdown to cap off that drive. He had four catches for 77 yards on the drive. Walter had a catch for big yards late in the game but, the official ruled he did not have both feet in bounds. After not having a single pass thrown in his direction for three quarters, he finished the game with a team high six receptions for 97 yards.

Week 8 - Despite the fact that three of the passes intended for Walter ended up in turnovers, it was clear that he was the favorite target of both quarterbacks. His ratio of passes seen really increased relative to the other players once Schaub left the game, however. Walter was the intended target on 11 of Rosenfels' 27 passes, and he responded by piling up receptions late in the game. A lot of his work was done in 'garbage time', but then again with Houston trailing by so much from a very early point, nearly the entire game could conceivably be referred to as garbage time. Walter actually could have had a huge game, but a poor pass from Rosenfels cost him. Walter had gotten wide open down the right sideline, and if the pass had gotten to him in stride or even a bit sooner, Walter likely could have walked into the end zone for a 67 yard touchdown. But the ball was woefully underthrown and broken up by CB Quentin Jammer at the last moment.

Week 9 - Alertly, Kevin Walter realized he hadn't been touched down after falling to the ground on one reception midway through the game and jumped up to gain another yard before being tackled in the second quarter.

Week 11 - Walter returned to his role of possession receiver, and was used mostly on short routes. He also lined up as the only tailback on a third-down play and carried the ball for a first down.

Week 12 - Walter became the primary target for Matt Schaub almost by default due to Johnson's struggles. His 17 yard touchdown catch came from a blown coverage assignment by Browns DB Leigh Bodden which left Walter all alone in the end zone. His role for the game was largely that of a possession receiver, working over the middle of the field and in shorter yardage passing situations.

Week 13 - Walter had a quiet day, though was the intended receiver on a deep pass over the middle late in the fourth quarter that was intercepted ending the Texans afternoon.

Week 14 - Walter finished with five receptions for 47 yards on eight targets, and added an eight yard touchdown.

Week 15 - Walter took two hand offs from QB Safe Rosenfels in the first half. The first attempt was on a standard end around play, and the second attempt was on a toss play.

Week 16 - Walter was nothing if not efficient, turning his five targets into four catches for 69 yards and an early score. He was the recipient of a 17 yard score on the game's opening drive, which is also known as the last time in the game that the Texans looked like they belonged on the same field as the Colts. Walter didn't catch another pass in the first half, and since the entire second half can be characterized as garbage time, that's where most of his damage came.

Week 17 - Walter's lone target was overthrown.
