2007 Game Summaries
Week 14 - Volek, returning to the stadium where he first made his name, looked so awful on his two pass attempts that the Chargers determined they'd be better off with a 75% Philip Rivers than a 100% Billy Volek. His first pass attempt was a terribly underthrown pass to Vincent Jackson in the end zone for what should have been a 46 yard touchdown but instead was a meaningless incompletion. His second pass attempt resulted in an interception, and his third drop-back resulted in a sack for a loss of five yards -- following a kneel down at the end of the first half, Volek didn't see another snap the remainder of the game..
Week 16 - Volek's performance essentially let Chargers fans see just how valuable Philip Rivers is to the team. Volek fumbled the snap on his second play under center, and he completed just one of three passes for a grand total of one yard.
Week 17 - Volek relieved Philip Rivers early in the fourth quarter and wasn't asked to do much more than turn and hand the ball off to RB Michael Turner. He nearly threw a touchdown pass on a jump ball to TE Antonio Gates on San Diego's final drive, but the big tight end was unable to establish positioning in the end zone and the pass fell incomplete.
Week 19 - When starter Philip Rivers left the game after re-injuring his knee on the final play of the third quarter, it fell on Volek to lead the Chargers back from a 24-21 deficit in a hostile environment with just over ten minutes left in the game and sitting at his own 22 yard line. Upon opening the drive, Volek played flawlessly. He engineered a nine play, 78 yard drive that ate up over five minutes of time and culminated with Volek himself diving into the end zone on a QB sneak for the eventual game-winning touchdown. During the drive, he didn't really try to do too much but he did make some nice plays in eluding the rush and finding the open man. On the 27 yard screen pass to Legedu Naanee, he found the most open man and enabled him to get downfield and into Colts territory to set up the score. Rivers is expected to be healthy enough to play in next week's AFC Championship Game, but if he can't (or if he is forced from the game at any point), Volek showed in very limited action that he can be relied upon in certain situations for his team.
