2007 Game Summaries
Week 6 - Despite only having a few days to prepare, Testaverde can credit his 21 NFL years of experience as a major reason why the Panthers won this game. Like a veteran quarterback should play, Testaverde was 20 for 33 for 206 yards and one touchdown. The biggest stat? No turnovers. Many of his throws were short ranged. When he did throw downfield, his rustiness showed as they were overthrown or thrown behind the receiver. He did hook up with Steve Smith for a 65 yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put the Panthers ahead for good. He targeted seven players and often did just enough to move the team downfield. He showed surprising velocity on his passes and when he was forced from the pocket, he showed agility. In short, he did not make the mistakes that would have put the Panthers in a hole.
Week 8 - Testaverde started off pretty well. He led Carolina on an 11 minute, 18 play drive to start the game. It looked like Carolina was going to take a big lead but Testaverde threw a bad interception in the end zone to end the threat. He was injured in the third quarter when he went to hand off and his lineman stepped on his ankle. He left the game and did not return. Testaverde finished 12 of 20 for 82 yards.
Week 10 - Testaverde was able to play after testing his Achilles in the pre game warm-ups. He finished the game going 13 of 28 for 153 yards and no touchdowns. For most of the game, Carolina did not try to open up the offense. It was late in the game when Testaverde was given the chance to make some throws. He drove them down the field and Carolina was able to tie the game with a field goal.
Week 11 - Testaverde went 19 of 37 for 258 yards and two touchdowns. The touchdowns came when Green Bay had the game well in hand. He was intercepted on the opening drive of the game on a poorly thrown pass. Testaverde had a pass picked off that was negated by a Green Bay penalty. Early in the third quarter, he was once again intercepted on a bad throw. His first touchdown came with Carolina down by 25 points in the third quarter. Late in the game Testaverde threw a touchdown to Drew Carter on a five yard pass. He didn't look terrible, but he was unable to carry this team without Steve Smith.
Week 12 - Testaverde was inactive for the game with back spasms.
Week 13 - Vinny Testaverde got the start in this game. With the Carolina defense playing great, he did just enough to win the game. Testaverde threw for 153 yards on 17 of 26 attempts. He threw two short touchdowns but was also picked off twice. Testaverde found Dante Rosario for a five yard touchdown and Jeff King for a one yard touchdown. He even lined up at wide receiver near the goal line with Steve Smith at the quarterback position. Smith ran the ball to the right with Vinny lined up on the left side. To his credit, he did try to block Nate Clements on the play.
Week 14 - Testaverde did not have good touch at all in this game. He was uncharacteristically missing his receivers when it looked like they might have a step on the defender. He completed 13 of 28 passes for 84 yards and no touchdowns. Testaverde threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Also, he had Jeff King down the middle but over threw him on what would have been a touchdown.
