Best Case
Stallworth size, speed, and big-play ability made him a top ten draft pick by the Saints in 2002; but after scoring 8 touchdowns on 42 receptions as a rookie, he's failed to live up to his potential in subsequent seasons. He has, however, shown flashes. Playing for the Eagles in 2006, he caught six passes for 141 yards and a touchdown in the first game of the season, and went on to post four 100-yard games that year. Playing for the Patriots in 2007, Stallworth had a three-game stretch (weeks 5-7) during which he scored the second-most fantasy points of any WR in the league. If he can play up to his potential for a sustained period, Stallworth is capable of putting up some very impressive numbers. A realistic ceiling for him with the Browns this season is probably around 1,100 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Worst Case
Stallworth has never had a 1,000 yard season, and has had trouble providing consistent production over the course of a year. If Stallworth cannot earn the trust of his quarterback and coaches early in the season, he may become a distant fourth target in the passing offense, behind Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, and Joe Jurevicius, all of whom have proven their mettle with the Browns. If Jurevicius fully recovers from his offseason knee surgery, Stallworth is not a lock to fill the number two WR spot all year.
Outlook
Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow will likely get the majority of the targets in the Browns' passing offense this season, leaving Stallworth to fill a complimentary role unlikely to impress his fantasy owners. He should be drafted as a fantasy WR5 in twelve-team leagues.
2007 Game Summaries
Week 1 - Stallworth was a player who seemed lost in the Patriots game plan. He was also targeted twice, catching one pass for nineteen yards from quarterback Tom Brady.
Week 2 - Stallworth has yet to play a major role in the New England offense, and only caught two passes for 19 yards. It appeared as though Brady could have completed more passes to him if New England was in a closer game.
Week 3 - Stallworth only caught a single pass for 28 yards and was very quiet overall. QB Tom Brady had little need to check down on his receiving options as WR Randy Moss and WR Wes Welker had big days against the young and inexperienced secondary for the Bills.
Week 4 - Stallworth caught his first pass for 14 yards and a first down in the first quarter. He would add one more pass for five yards in the second quarter. His biggest catch of the game came on a short pass he turned into a 23 yard gain and a first down in the third quarter. He would add one more catch for seven yards in the game. Stallworth was more a complimentary receiver in the game but, he did get six looks in the game.
Week 5 - Stallworth had a big game, catching four balls for 65 yards and one touchdown. On his TD, he caught a short pass over the middle, broke one tackle, and followed a Sammy Morris block into the end zone. Stallworth also ran a reverse for 12 yards, but later dropped a third down pass that would have gained much more than a first down.
Week 6 - Stallworth caught all seven of his targets and led New England in receiving yardage. More than half of the yards came his 69 yard touchdown catch and run. Brady hit him in stride on the play. Stallworth then, stiff armed cornerback Jacques Reeves to the ground and was off to the races.
Week 7 - Stallworth is making an impact in New England. Despite being overshadowed by the success of WR Randy Moss and WR Wes Welker, Stallworth is producing for the Patriots. On the first drive of the game, Stallworth caught a ball over the middle and then proceeded to break two tackles and spin past another defender before trotting into the end zone. Stallworth's ability to produce yards after the catch is making the New England passing attack even more deadly.
Week 8 - Stallworth was targeted on both short and deep routes by Brady. He finished third on the team in both receptions and yardage.
Week 9 - Stallworth was targeted four times in the game, catching two passes for 42 yards. One pass thrown his way was picked off by the Colts, but Stallworth did add a 33 yard reception that helped set up a New England touchdown.
Week 11 - Early in the first quarter, QB Tom Brady hit WR Donte Stallworth in stride with a perfectly placed pass but Stallworth let it bounce of his hands. There was only one defender between him and the endzone.
Week 12 - Stallworth's second catch of the game came on New England's second drive and went for 31 yards. On the play, he caught a short pass and was able to break a tackle for the big gain. Stallworth's other three catches went for a total of 23 yards.
Week 13 - Stallworth caught three of the four balls thrown his way for 68 yards. He is a threat that spreads the defense and makes it tough to defend the Patriots, that being said he is still behind Welker and Moss.
Week 14 - Stallworth was quiet in the victory over the Steelers. His single reception featured a broken tackle which will help to further solidify his reputation as a receiver with a penchant for gaining yards after the catch no matter the circumstance.
Week 15 - Stallworth was a non factor as he saw only two balls come his way and he was not able to record a catch.
Week 16 - Stallworth was mostly a non-factor in the victory for New England. He is clearly the fourth wide receiver option in New England. Both of his receptions came on the Patriots' first possession of the game.
Week 17 - Donte Stallworth played in three and four receiver sets, and caught all three of his targets for 32 yards. Though Stallworth has elite deep speed, Moss is clearly the preferred deep weapon of Tom Brady as Stallworth was never looked at down the field.
Week 19 - Stallworth was not targeted until the second half, but caught every pass thrown to him. He showed good speed on the one deep pass play the Patriots attempted, and good moves to elude a defender and turn a very short pass into a good run for a first down.
Week 20 - Stallworth had a rough game, as he was the target on two of Brady's three interceptions. In fact, one of the interceptions was directly Stallworth's fault as he allowed the ball to bounce off his fingertips and into the waiting arms of CB Drayton Florence. Stallworth also caught just two passes, both of them short looks, and wasn't able to get separation on any deep balls against Quentin Jammer.
Week 21 - Stallworth was not a huge factor on the night. He was the clear cut third option in the receiving game and only got targeted five times. He caught three of those for a total of 34 yards, one of which he broke a tackle to gain 18 yards on.
