2007 Game Summaries
Week 5 - Smith entered the game late after Croyle replaced Huard and caught both short passes thrown his way.
Week 10 - Fifth round draft choice and rookie Kolby Smith saw time in hopes of gaining valuable experience in game situations as the backup for Priest Holmes. He had only two carries and he caught two of the four passes meant for him.
Week 11 - Smith was used to provide Priest Holmes with an occasional breather until Holmes left the game with an injury in the third quarter. Smith looked good in relief, showing good speed and agility. He showed good hands in the passing game, catching all three targets and turning the short passes into good gains.
Week 12 - Kolby Smith was brought in to hold down the starting running back position until Larry Johnson returns from his injury. Not a lot was expected from him. After turning in the best Kansas City Chiefs rushing performance of 2007, there does not seem to be as much reason to worry about hurrying Johnson back. It should be kept in mind that Smith put in his incredible performance against one of the worst run defenses in the league. Even with that, his performance was stunning as he gained 150 yards on 31 carries with two touchdowns. The downside of his game would have to be his role as a receiver. He was targeted five times and only had one catch for two yards. The other four throws were all very catchable, but they were dropped by Smith. All things considered, it was an impressive debut.
Week 13 - Coming off a terrific performance against the lowly Oakland Raiders, a lot of people were curious to see how Smith would perform against one of the league's more respected rushing defenses. The answer: four yards per carry, and he looked pretty good in doing so. When the game was still close, he was able to consistently keep the chains moving and pick up positive yardage. He added a couple of receptions in the passing game, but was far from a huge contributor there (then again, no one on the Chiefs contributed much in the passing game outside of Tony Gonzalez and to a lesser extent, Dwayne Bowe). Smith converted a key fourth down run late in the third quarter and rarely got tackled on first contact, two signs that are sure to impress the coaching staff and ensure consistent carries going forward. Perhaps most importantly, with the turnover-fest going on with the rest of the Kansas City offense, Smith didn't come close to losing the football on any of his 23 touches.
Week 14 - Rookie Kolby Smith had enjoyed some good outings since replacing running backs Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson, but he was brought back to Earth rather harshly. He managed a pathetic 12 yards on 13 carries and another negative two yards on one catch. Smith is better than he looked for this game, but without help up front, nobody can run for the Chiefs.
Week 15 - Kolby Smith had another good rushing performance in relief of the still injured Larry Johnson. Smith collected 82 yards on only 18 carries. He was the beneficiary of the increased passing attack opening up the running lanes. Smith may have a good future but will probably move to first backup when Johnson does finally return.
Week 16 - Smith only had 60 yards on 17 carries, but he caught all seven passes thrown to him for an additional 55 yards. That is especially significant after he had seemed to have trouble securing the ball in his first few games. This should build the Chiefs' coaches' confidence in Smith's abilities.
Week 17 - Smith carried twice for one yard before leaving the game with an injury. Fellow rookie, Jackie Battle, came in to handle the rushing duties for the remained of the contest.
