Outlook

Jerry Porter continues to generate buzz in fantasy circles based on his ability to find the endzone and produce solid yardage totals even when he isn't catching a lot of passes. For his career, Porter averages a touchdown every 10 catches and almost 14 yards per reception. If he were to find himself in a situation where he could catch 70 or 80 passes, Jerry Porter could pay huge dividends for savvy fantasy owners. Porter's addition to the suddenly crowded Jacksonville receiving corps should provide David Garrard with another solid option as Porter is a much more reliable downfield threat then the other Jaguar receivers. However, unless the Jaguars suddenly decide to it is very unlikely that Porter will produce top-20 numbers. Porter is worth a flyer in the late rounds, but don't overpay for him.

Why he is undervalued

according to one of our writers (based on an ADP of 102, WR 37 on June 12 --- go here for the complete article)

Jason Wood - Let's see...Jerry Porter goes from a dysfunctional offense in Oakland to one of the league's best teams in Jacksonville. He lands a huge contract and gets to play with the Jags newly minted $60mm franchise passer. While I can understand that people might be reluctant to expect greatness from Porter, I find it incredulous to think he won't be a top 30 fantasy option this year if healthy, and that means his current ADP screams value.

Why he is overvalued

according to three of our writers (based on an ADP of 102, WR 37 on June 12 --- go here for the complete article)

David Dodds - I am not sold that Jerry Porter will emerge as the best WR in Jacksonville. In fact I won't be shocked when he isn't even a starting WR there. And the way the Jaguars use receivers (constantly rotating different ones in plus electing to run more than pass) should be enough reasons to stay clear of Porter this season.

Andy Hicks - So this is the year that Jerry Porter finally has a productive season? Excuse me if I've heard this before. Moving to the conservative offense of Jacksonville in amongst the cluster of receivers congregated there is not going to turn Porter into fantasy gold. Porter has been a tease and hits 30 this year. No Thanks.

Jeff Tefertiller - Jerry Porter signed with the Jaguars in free agency. Jacksonville is not a great place for receivers to pad their stats. In 2007, the leading receiver had only 629 receiving yards. In 2006, the receiving leader had 643 yards. The Jaguars are an abyss for fantasy football receivers. With Porter's injury history, this will not be the year he breaks 1,000 receiving yards for the first time of his career.

2007 Game Summaries

Week 1 - Porter still seems to be in a bit of a funk, only posting two catches for 26 yards. McCown seems to be looking to Curry first and TE Zach Miller second. With Mike Williams' college connections to Kiffin, Porter's playing time might diminish unless he starts showing more on the field.

Week 2 - Porter caught one pass for a 46 yard touchdown on a beautiful double move that Dre Bly bit on perfectly. He was targeted a total of six times in this game, but three of those resulted in Josh McCown interceptions. Though he made the biggest impact of any Raiders wide receiver, he was virtually non existent for most of the game. He had trouble creating any type of separation from coverage.

Week 3 - Porter was targeted a number of times in the red zone, however errant passes prevented Porter from hauling in a touchdown against the Browns.

Week 4 - Porter was targeted three times in the passing game, coming down with receptions on all three for 52 yards and two touchdowns. In the first quarter with the Raiders in the redzone, Daunte Culpepper found Porter on a slant to the left side in tight coverage for Porter's first score of the game. Later in the fourth quarter, Culpepper hit Porter down the right sideline on a perfect throw for a 28 yard score.

Week 6 - Throwing to Porter was just a bad idea for Daunte Culpepper, at least in this game. Twice he tried getting the football to his wideout, only to see the ball picked off by a San Diego defender. In fairness to Porter, neither of the interceptions were his fault as they were both simply awful passes by Culpepper. Porter never really came close to making any really big plays, either, with his long gain going for 16.

Week 7 - Porter had only one catch for the day but it was the longest play from scrimmage for the Raiders. He pulled in a 59 yard pass from Culpepper but seemed to hurt his leg on the play. He took a bit extra time to get up and off the field, but he was back soon afterwards.

Week 8 - Porter was targeted nine times in the game to lead the club, catching four balls for 46 yards.

Week 9 - Porter made a sensational catch and run in the third quarter. He broke the first tackle and sprinted down the sideline before spinning past the next defender and falling to the ground for a 32 yard gain.

Week 10 - Porter was targeted five times, catching two passes for 22 yards. He'd been questionable before the game but was able to contribute in the offense.

Week 11 - Porter was targeted a team high 11 times in this game, and seven of those targets came in the second half when he was able to grab four passes for 67 yards. His longest grab of the game came in the third quarter and went for 38 yards. Porter also caught a fourth quarter pass that went for 28 yards.

Week 12 - Porter was targeted almost as much as Curry but he was more sought after for long gains. He collected 75 yards on his three catches. Porter, who has had some problems with injuries this year, is still a great threat for extended yardage after the catch. However after two of his catches, he seemed injured and had to leave the field. He came back but he seems to be a little bit of an injury risk currently.

Week 13 - Porter led the Raiders with five receptions. Porter's 13 yard reception was his fourth touchdown of the season and his first since week four. Porter made a beautiful catch on JaMarcus Russell's first pass. Russell's strike was a bit wide, but Porter snagged the ball and dragged his toes. Porter also made a highlight reel one-handed grab on a high throw across the middle.

Week 14 - Despite being targeted six times in the first half, Porter did not catch a ball until 40 seconds remained in the second quarter. Even though he got started a little late, he made his two catches count. His first catch went for 20 yard reception and took the football down to the Green Bay 25 yard line. On the very next play, Porter made a leaping catch over the top of Al Harris for a touchdown. He was the intended receiver on Josh McCown's first interception.

Week 15 - Porter led the Raiders with four receptions for 32 yards. Half of his targets came in the fourth quarter when Indianapolis went ahead. His last target came on fourth and nine at the Colts' 16 yard line but the slant pass fell incomplete because the defensive back was holding his right arm.

Week 16 - Porter caught only two passes against a tough secondary. They tried to get him the ball down the sideline, but the coverage was too tight.

Week 17 - Porter didn't see very much action due to the fact that he was being blanketed by Pro Bowl CB Antonio Cromartie for much of the afternoon. He did, however, break free over the middle for a nice sliding grab of a bullet pass for a 32 yard touchdown strike from JaMarcus Russell late in the third quarter.
