Best Case

Jermaine Phillips solidified his starting job with a solid 2007 season, finishing among the top ten IDP safeties overall. Little has changed in Phillips' situation for 2008. He should be a safe bet for 70 solos and a DB2 finish. If the Bucs' linebacker corps struggles with age or poor play, Phillips opportunity may increase enough to push him over 75 solos and DB1 status.

Worst Case

Phillips still has second year safety Sabby Piscitelli waiting in the wings should he revert to the struggles that had him on the hot seat in 2006 and early 2007. If MLB Barrett Ruud recovers the form that made him one of the best IDPs of the first half of last season, Phillips may not have enough opportunity to generate the tackles needed to stay out of the DB3 tier.

Outlook

Phillips is a little risky as a high DB2 selection given his potential tackle inconsistency and background risk of losing his job to Piscitelli should he struggle. But he should be safe enough as a later selection with upside.
