Best Case

Chris Perry will enter training camp healthy for the first time since his rookie year in 2004. While Rudi Johnson is expected to chair the RB committee, Perry will provide a change of pace and will probably get plenty of work out of the backfield on passing downs. If Rudi Johnson begins to struggle, Perry could end up getting the bulk of the Bengals' carries. He has been effective when he has been healthy enough to play: although he has just 73 career carries, he has averaged 4.6 yards per rush and has also demonstrated fine skills as a pass receiver.

Worst Case

The two biggest obstacles between Chris Perry and fantasy success are: (a) his propensity for injury, and (b) the Bengals' crowded backfield. Perry has spent more time hurt than healthy so far in his four years in the NFL. He spent the 2007 season on injured reserve after suffering knee and ankle injuries in November 2006. Perry has participated fully in the Bengals' mini-camp practices this offseason, but he'll be sharing carries in a large RB committee expected to include Rudi Johnson, Kenny Watson, DeDe Dorsey, and possibly Kenny Irons. With Johnson probably taking the lead role, Perry may not get enough touches to be worth a fantasy roster spot.

Outlook

With Rudi Johnson expected to get the majority of the reps at RB for the Bengals, Chris Perry will probably be part of a three- or four-way committee, competing primarily with Kenny Watson for the number two role. Because Perry would likely split carries even if Rudi Johnson were injured, he is strictly a late-round fantasy prospect, with little probability that he'll ever be worth starting.
