Best Case
J.T. O'Sullivan follows Mike Martz over from Detroit to San Francisco. O'Sullivan would have to be a long shot to triumph over Alex Smith and Shaun Hill, but like fellow former NFL Europe star, Kurt Warner he knows the Martz system. Martz has stated that O'Sullivan is in the mix to start for the 49ers: "(O'Sullivan) is capable of being a starter in this league. He's not a reliever, if you will. He's not a backup. He'll take full advantage of (the competition). He's a very fierce competitor." If one thing is clear it's that Mike Martz loves an underdog QB (Warner, Marc Bulger, Trent Green and Jon Kitna were all undrafted or late round picks).
Worst Case
Since being drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2002, J.T O'Sullivan has been in and out of more clubs than Lindsay Lohan. The 49ers represent his ninth NFL franchise, mostly on practice squads, not to mention his NFL Europe stints. To be rejected by 8 franchises must tell us something about the skill set of O'Sullivan. Although he has knowledge of the Martz system, that will only count until Alex Smith and Shaun Hill figure it out. There is also every possibility that O'Sullivan gets beat out by Drew Olsen for the No. 3 role.
Outlook
If you are looking for a QB sleeper for 2008 don't rule out J.T O'Sullivan. Mike Martz seems to like guys who have to overcome obstacles on their road to success. Having said that Martz won't start O'Sullivan for the sake of it, Alex Smith and Shaun Hill easily have the inside track and would have to lose the job rather than O'Sullivan winning it. Someone is going to have fantasy success at QB in San Francisco and O'Sullivan has a slim chance to be that guy.

2007 Game Summaries
Week 2 - O'Sullivan entered the day having never thrown an NFL pass in his life. The former NFL Europe MVP was called upon when starter Jon Kitna left in the second quarter with a concussion. O'Sullivan asserted himself fairly well early on considering his lack of experience, and did a decent job of moving the ball. For the most part, he stayed within himself and simply dropped the ball off to the receivers and allowed them to make plays. On the few rare occasions he did try to make something happen, it usually backfired (as was the case on the two interceptions, both of which were on deep balls). The fumble and ensuing touchdown recovery by the Vikings will be charged to O'Sullivan, but clearly wasn't his fault. He was attempting to hand the ball off, but DL Pat Williams was already in the backfield and disrupting the exchange before O'Sullivan even knew he was there. It was a good opportunity for O'Sullivan to get in-game experience without costing his team a victory. It could prove to be important should he ever need to be called upon again due to a Kitna injury (and with Kitna's history, that's a pretty good bet).
